I have a weird urge to pick up a generic normie online shooter.
Which one is better?

not so, think of it as map wounding up on itself, making you look at what seemed to be a straightforward jaunt from a different perspective.
DMC did it wrong, From Software did it right. Backtracking is the only way to have player feel like they discovered the place inside out.
When you aren't doing the exact same shit and it's interconnected enough yes.

Open it and play it, it's a fantastic game. Much better than Unity for sure.
It's definitely one of the top 2 AC games with AC2.

If you're talking about the one in Final Fantasy X, he's completely pointless to the story. You could take him out and Tidus' end goal of fighting his dad and Yu Yevon wouldn't change.
