I think what matters most is you pick a game and get dedicated to it. Has to be 1 game.
I recommend Blazing Star as its kind of easy. Some games you will want to refer to a guide or videos, there is no way around it with being creative on your own.

Mushihimesama. The best shmup on PC right now, is a recent port so you won't have to deal with shit like the game only supporting 640x480 windowed, and has a babby mode as well.
