Why does every good fighting game have to spam magical lighting pollution when punches connect? Can't there be at least one that's free from magic balls of light? It can have costume degradation or bruises or whatever (copious amounts of blood are boring).

In some cases they work into the gameplay. Tekken as an example, the different-colored sparks let you know if the hit is low, mid, high, counter etx.

Well it can be neglected if the animation / character design is good enough. With visual cues you could even get rid of health bars, body is the best UI.
