Dark Souls reveals that life is more suffering than pleasure, more failure than success, and that even the momentary relief of achievement is wiped away by new levels of difficulty. It is also a testament to our persistence in the face of that suffering, and it offers the comfort of a community of other players all stuck in the same hellish quagmire. Those are good qualities. That is art. And you can get all of that from the first five hours of Dark Souls. The remaining 50 or so offer nothing but an increasingly nonsensical variation on that experience.
If Dark Souls was a 5 hour game, it would be 10/10, but it's not, so it's not.
i only spent around 5 hours on it before getting bored.

I played SR4 and thought it was alright but I'm looking for a better sandbox experience and heard from other people that pic related is just that. Is this game worth $10 with the DLC or should I just get the base game for $5?

It's basically a giant naval sandbox game with a Warhammer theme to it. It takes all of the things that made games like Pirates! and Black Flag great, but what really makes it great is the Warhammer theme makes it great, there's are towering sharks and sea monsters that can tear your ships apart, chaos and Ork fleets invade en masse at random times, and there's already tons of different ship types. Ork's for example have one ship that's literally just a giant drill.
The battles are fucking great. Everything's in realtime and you can board ships or snipe enemies from afar with rifles. You can even switch off between the different crew you've hired and equip them with unique weapons
I also love the fucking events. I took a mission to escort some people from a town that was affected by the plaque. While I was sailing around all of a sudden a bunch of undead/infected invaded my ship and attacked my crew.
Of course all the other Warhammer factions like Kislev and what not are in the game with more to come in updates.
