If you want a dungeon crawler, go for EO4, it's way better.
I liked Persona Q but I never finished it because it didn't hold my interest long enough. I'd probably recommend devil survivor as long as you're up for a challenge. I recommend devil survivor 2 more though. That's one of my favorite SMT games.
When does this get good? I played 20 hours and so far NOTHING interesting has happened. In fact nothing has happened at all other than me doing a bunch of fucking fetch quests. Fuck where's the bad guy who wants to become god? Where are the over the top villains? Where's the futuristic psychedelic weird ass dungeons? Where's the ultra advanced ancient civilization? Where are the sentient robots, 10.000 years old little girls, ancient demons, human-animal-angel-devil hybrids? Jesus fucking christ this has to be the most boring, repetitive, uninteresting JRPG I've ever played. The most interesting thing about this snorefest are the witty retorts when you examine empty chests.
And don't even get me started on the shitty combat system devoid of any strategy despite the grid, and with that awful music that's more fitting for a casino minigame. And man the graphics are so bad, I mean sub PS1 tier bad. If anything, playing this game makes me want to replay Grandia on the PS1.
I always felt Trails in the Sky wasn't supposed to be anything you described above, it's just a simple, cozy adventure with lots of fun conversations.

The over the top stuff is what makes JRPGs interesting though. I mean fuck, not even the church is evil this time around, there's no evil superpopes either, it's just a bunch of kids doing boy scout errands. The most evil thing that happened so far was the blue haired bitch talking shit about Estelle before getting her ass kicked, literally high school tier drama.
And please don't give me the "comfy" meme, this game isn't comfy, the graphics are too crude for it to be comfy. Play Kirby Epic Yarn or Eurotruck Simulator if you want comfy.
