Just bought this game. Do I need to buy the DLC right away or can I wait until I beat vanilla? Also should I go for a str build or dex build first?

I've almost platinum'ed the game and I don't have to DLC.
Honestly increase vitality and endurance almost equally, maybe vitality in preference.
What I did my first run through was up strength to 25 and then skill to 25 and use Ludwig's Holy Blade when you get it.
Broke down and picked this up.
It's a lot better than I expected. Definitely doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting here now that it got popular.

You have a protector and medic in EO1, you're already set.
Having a protector, medic, survivalist and troubadour on the same team means you have very little damage
You're gonna hate anything that resists physical attacks.
If you have Survivalist, you're good, because it is broken as shit in the first game.
