It's become the primary overabundant indie game but I don't think there's anything wrong with the genre itself. Just the fact that it's popular enough that a lot of the untalented or uncreative people immediately wanna make them.

As far as I'm aware the only real difference in function is that the Xbone controller's dpad isn't complete garbage. If you're not gonna use the dpad no reason to switch from a 360 controller.

So I just beat 999 on emulator and loved it, so I downloaded VLR on the eshop last night.
Holy shit, why did they move to voice actors and 3D models? 999 I practically couldn't put down, but I only made it through an hour of VLR last night before checking the clock and deciding to go to bed.
The kid and the rabbit's voices are especially grating, the rest are bearable. The 3D models aren't awful looking but their animations can be awful. Like when someone says something suprising and it cuts to their reaction faces, its fucking awful and makes the whole thing seem like a joke instead of having the serious tone the first game had.
This wouldn't have bothered me if this was a standalone game, but they got it right in the first one, so its disappointing they fucked up this badly in a sequel.

3D models are cheaper and when they started development they wanted to do something about the 3D effect because they thought it was a requirement for games on the 3DS.
Voice acting is common on VNs, 999 didn't have it just because it wouldn't fit on a DS cart.
I assume you're talking about the English dub here, Zero Jr's voice is great and the acting is amazing, it's just that the character is supposed to be fucking annoying. In fact most of the dub was top tier, too bad it most likely won't be that way in the sequel.

That's fucking it? It was just a bunch of standard entries about how criminals were used for the brains and a couple of interviews with them after having had their brains extracted. That wasn't impressive at all. Worst part is that when we had a conversation about it and I mentioned how I still found the Vault 11 entries from NV more impressive he went on and called me an obsidrone. He never even fucking played NV and just read the wiki entries on Vault 11. Thank fucking god I didn't pay for that official paid mod.

I'm being completely serious, /v/ constantly argues that hand holding is bad and that it just makes the game too easy, yet when a game refuses to hand hold they claim it's broken and poorly designed.
Pic related is a perfect example of what /v/ considers "poorly designed" even though it's what they constantly state they want, a puzzle where the player is given no hints and simply told to figure it out themselves.
Obviously any well designed game will communicate and teach things to the player in an subtle way. This is what level design's all about. Hand holding is when a game does it in an obnoxious, obvious, lazy way such as text prompts and lengthy tutorials, and does not let you fail when you're not paying attention.

No, you're comparing opposite extremes.
The point is that a game can direct a player intuitively without intrusive prompts and immersion breaking tutorials and shit. It's good if a game can unfold its challenge where the player can eventually tackle more difficult things without confusion through natural gameplay and little else.
Demonstrating and explaining videogame mechanics is not hand-holding, that's essential to playing the game (see jumping in the souls series). Being railroaded and the game being very easy is hand holding, and yeah it detracts from the experience. I hate to get all kids-these-days but a game being as hard as any PS1 Crash Bandicoot game is a selling point now because challenge is no longer the default
