Not really, the mechanics are the same for each race. Playing the campaign teaches you to play as you go adding more and more stuff as you go.

Just face it, being able to get a game for free will impact sales, just because you see big AAA games still sell well does not mean there is no lost sales, its more about the smaller games.

Am I a scrub for hiding behind a shield in this game? I'm not that far into it, but so far I've beaten Asylum Demon, Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles, and Capra Demon, all through hiding behind a shield I picked up in the Parish. You can basically block everything, so I'm not seeing any reason not to use one so far. I've tried two handing and rolling instead but 4/5 times I get caught by an attack and then immediately start shielding again.
Also, I'm currently using a Longsword which I've upgraded to +5 with these titanite shard things, and honestly it seems to be working out pretty well. I like the moveset and it has some decent power, but should I be investing in a stronger weapon by now? The Longsword only scales in C in both DEX and STR and I really want something which has A or S scaling in STR since that's the kinda build I'm running with.

You are ougth to find better weapons soon. Nothing wrong with sticking to what you are comfortable with. Weapons in DS aren't about the dqmage output but how comfortable you feel with their moveset.
And nothing wrong with using shields, they are great for PvE
if you don't feel comfortable dodging and parrying then by all means use a shield, but i do think it is worth trying to learn how to do both of those things
Question for fighting game players, are there any attacks in any other fighting games that are as broken as Fox's shine in melee?

I think the game is really fun actually, it feels like what smite should have been, where there's actually verticality to it instead of being trapped to a single plane. The player base is really awful though as >>332215530 said. If you don't carry I don't see how the game could be fun.
