Why do so many games drop the ball with this? Final Fantasy in particular is especially heinous, only FFVIII and FFXIII got it right.

Yeah, but the writing was atrocious and I gave up before finishing anything.
I tried, but there's always this "comfort curve" when it comes to vn. I have to stomach my way through until I really start to enjoy it and the characters. Usually towards the end I'm invested in it and the endings are impactful leaving me wanting more. That all being said, I couldn't get past that curve with this and gave up on it.
I haven't yet but I was planning on it. Is it as bad as >>333489191 says?

Honestly, 300 battle size is as far as you should go in vanilla. The game just shits itself as far as battle is concerned past that.
