In a game with no dialogue and an emphasis on telling its story through sound, colour and imagery, a scene this emphasized gives the impression this is an important aspect of the story.

One of the characters talks about one of the titans when it was alive
From what I can tell, they were a byproduct of the huge explosion that happened in the opening cutscene, caused a bunch of shit to go down, then died off or were killed. You play in the aftermath of all the crazy bullshit to hunt down diamond keys that unlock the chamber that houses the source of the crazy bullshit or something.
Story's not too clear, but it's obvious that the titans themselves were never really meant to be something that you fight. Pay attention a bit more.
How come Japanese directors become famous and big while western directors remain nameless and muted? You never hear about any big western directors leading new AAA projects anymore. Are they not allowed to express themselves by their publishers?

So is there any reason to like this game over Dark Souls other than "it's kind of charming in a way" ?
the fact that dark souls is just a rehash of it. the better question is if it's worth playing dark souls when you've already played demon's. not really.
I like how fast-paced the game is. It's really easy to just pick up and do an entire playthrough in a single day.
It still has the best NPC's, better atmosphere, and on average better level-design than DS I+II.
I honestly think the Dark Souls trilogy is kind of the weakest part of Soulsborne.

Outstanding game brimming with so many amazing ideas and concepts. Also a motherfuck ton of content. Co-op, counter co-op, challenge mode, target practice, death match with bots. The game was a beast.
