Gameplay and engine were god-tier, but the missions were very repetitive and the story was unfinished. Honestly, I blame Konami, not Kojima.
I think of Kojima had more control and more time, it would have been one of the greatest games ever made.

Dark souls is mainly about patience, practice, and timing. This game punishes shield usage much more so try to learn to roll out of the enemies attacks. Iudex Gundyr is pretty hard for a first boss but if you keep trying you will definitely get it. Good luck anon!!
