Yeah, but he also had some reasons other than that for taking it, such as Stannis being extremely disliked (an aside: I never understood why he was apparently so popularly disliked in the book while everyone liked Ned, who was very similar to Stannis). Stannis also had weak alliances compared to Renly and no heirs. Stannis following a very unpopular foreign religion certainly didn't help his cause either, especially since many apparently thought he was under Melisandre's control.

I'm not sure how you keep reaching this conclusion. Getting rid of a previous ruler does not get rid of previously established traditions; for instance, the Targs uniting and taking over Westeros didn't mean they got of rule based on inheritance, they were just the ones to take power.

So, during the Long Night thousands of years ago undead invaded the lands and an hero named "Azor Ahai" managed to stop this curse with some fire power. Now there's a prophecy going on who tell us that the cycle will repeat. Winter is coming with a never ending night and Azor Ahai will raise again to save the day. Acording to many theory, Jon Snow, who just came back from the dead, is that guy. At this point, if you played any Dark Souls game, you know where I'm going.

I think Stannis is too autist to play second fiddle to his younger brother, and would be the better king because he's not blinded by showmanship and finery. If Renly weren't such a showboating dipshit he could have backed Stannis as king, and acted as hand himself. Stannis is a very strong stoic figure, unmovable, while Renly would be the kingdom's customer service rep who could easily keep the people on Stannis' side and soften Stannis' leadership style a bit, all without the pressure of needing an heir.
Stannis would reign in the flamboyant spending and focus on things that must be done like prepping for winter and investigating issues such as the rise of the Others and return of the Dragons, while Renly could still dress pretty and throw parties so long as he finds the coin to do so.
Renly wouldn't be as bad as Robert was, I'm sure, but he still does not have the skill to prioritize or make hard decisions, and is far too wrapped up in aesthetics rather than practicality. The whole reason things went so bad for Ned and Robbert was that they were in entirely the wrong roles. Ned would have made a good king, and would not have tolerated the shit Robbert tolerated. Robbert then could have been the hand where he'd just fill in when Ned needs him to and take care of entertaining idiots to keep them loyal.

Renly had his imperfections but he was nowhere near as bad as Robert. Do remember that Robert was likely drinking a lot of his misery away (the loss of Lyanna mostly, maybe potential guilt for killing Targ babies, and having to marry bitch Cersei).
Renly wasn't bright but he at least sort of cared about being a king, if at least in symbol only. At the very least he wasn't a drunken idiot.

Renly wasn't a cruel, drunken tyrant. He was by no means smart, but also wasn't a horrible person, much in the same way Robert was. Unlike Robert, he wasn't a drunken hedonist. And the Robert/Ned situation went well beyond Robert fucking up and Ned trying to fix it, there were other forces at work. It could very well be that Renly and the Tyrells would have butted heads, but that isn't a guarantee either, as the Tyrells would likely know how to work with someone like Stannis and aren't up to the same shit the Lannisters were.

Except no matter how much they liked Renly they wouldn't ally with Stannis just for that. And I didn't say the hand has more power, just that it's very likely that you'd get a situation where the king acts as a popular figurehead while the hand deals with the nitty gritty details of ruling. Stannis would have been good as a just hand, but he didn't really have what it took to be a popular figurehead the way Renly did.
I'm not even a Renlyfag but you have to look at this realistically. Leaders are often figureheads based on how attractive and charming they are while its others (here the hand or the council) are often the ones making important decisions for the kingdom. Both Renly and Stannis had their strengths and weaknesses that just worked differently for different roles.
Another important note is that as readers we know Stannis would have been the better king, but in the book universe not many would have agreed to that.
