Sweden and Denmark are separated by water so short that you can see the other side at all times. You can walk it in cold winter.

The nautical terms you mention originate from old english, and if you watched abit more you'd know they have not been there , and thats what they needed the fancy technology, no to sail to Denmark, but to find and prove there are lands beyond that...
