Because it was released in the 70s when there was nothing close to that scale and production value and despite the terrible writing the story is an old timeless tale of the hero. Acting was alright.

How did this movie make so much money? It came out of nowhere with no hollywood stars, made the most money ever (for its time), and then just disappeared without a trace of cultural relevance or impact.
I mean at least Pirates of the Carribean created a staple Hollyween costume. This movie just came and went, like many movies do, only somehow it made a bajillion dollars. How? What did it do and why don't other rather meaningless action scam-you movies do so?
