well there was a point when x-files worked even without mulder and it was most of season 9 imo
season 8 had trouble finding its identity and they had to tack on characters and plots to coast to s9 somehow but had some redeeming features. Although I gotta say by the end of it I was absolutely sick of preggo scully and endless MUH BABY episodes

Being a Coen Brothers film, i had high expectations for it, but it was a bit of a letdown.
It shouldn't have been a bad film: it had the always pleasant 1950s setting, actors i like, an interesting premise, but it just wasn't very good. There really wasn't a plot. It was like a series of vignettes or short stories with no central conflict. They should have just picked one plotline and developed it the whole way.
Did anyone else see this?
The the episodic/atypical plot is nothing new to the Coens, but this one lacked whatever spark made those previous films work as well as the humor. It's simply not very funny, that's the biggest problem as well as the lack of compelling plot and characters

On my second viewing of Season 1, on episode 4.
Goddamn... fucking perfection. It's so fucking disgustingly good. I liked it the first time but not this much. That's a sign of a great show.
I think I still like Sopranos more since you'll always find something new with it every time you return... I don't think that will happen with this. But still, goddamn good fucking show, easily my second favourite after Sopranos. I'm only talking about the first season as I haven't seen S2 but I heard it wasn't as good.
Also best fucking opening sequence ever.

I feel like the shootout in episode 4 is a tad overblown. Yes, the camerawork is phenomenal in every way, but the whole thing was just a task for the bald guy to try to get info about the meth supplier. I didn't feel like a whole lot was at stake or anything. Season 2's shootout was more engaging: The foreboding music that let you know a mistake was being made, civilians getting caught in the crossfire, each of the protagonists colors shining fully through ala gaycop being in complete control.
