“In cricket you mark a centre line to know where your middle stump is, so I marked that,” he recalls. “But my bat kept slipping on the crease, because it was a brand new wicket. So I got my spikes and I started scratching the surface and all of a sudden I got this perfect cross on the wicket. I did it at the other end too, so every ball, I’m looking down and there’s a perfect cross, and I’ve been meditating on it for months.”
The man nicknamed ‘JL’ went on to make 250, his highest Test score, while fellow opening batsman Matthew Hayden also reached triple figures.
Four years later Langer and Hayden had become Australia’s most successful opening batsmen, and one of the most prolific pairs in cricket history.
The secret to their success? The cross.
“Matthew Hayden and I, every game after that, we used to put the cross on the turf,” Langer told The Record in an interview recently.
“We didn’t even have to talk about it, it was just part of our partnership, every time we batted for the next four years we had a cross on the wicket. Now that has been a secret, but I’m happy to share it.”
Langer made his debut for the Australian cricket team in 1993 as a 22-year-old, but struggled to retain his spot in the side, playing just three Test matches in the space of five years.
He says it was a difficult period, but his faith in God helped him get through.
“In life we all have down times, but to have that faith and to have those Scriptures to draw on, really it’s beautiful,” he says
Langer began reading the Bible during the flight, and was struck by Philippians 4:13, which he interprets as “God gives me the strength to achieve anything”.
It was his inspiration for the greatest innings of his career
“All I said every ball for six hours was “God gives me the strength to achieve anything”, it was like a mantra, it was like I was meditating,” he says
Langer says his performance that day proved to him that he could perform under great pressure and against quality opposition

It’s November 2017*, and the battle for Test cricket’s most prestigious trophy – and its number one billing – is about to resume as Mitchell Starc stands atop his run-up in Brisbane’s broiling early afternoon heat, tossing a shiny magenta ball from hand to hand as the Gabba fans find their voice. Some 50 metres ahead of him, squatting and stretching in the post-lunch heat, is England opener Sam Robson whose Australian heritage has yielded more words than the 28-year-old can boast Test runs in the weeks and months leading into his team’s Ashes defence. Robson has been brought back into the England fold due to ex-captain Alastair Cook’s retirement at the end of the previous home summer, having decided that the remarkable achievements of his record-setting Test career did not need to stretch to a fourth Ashes tour Down Under.
A fair enough call, given Cook hung up his hat as his country’s most capped Test player, its most successful Test captain and the only England player to have topped 11,000 Test runs which saw him installed among the 10 most prolific batters the game has produced. But more importantly for Cook, he helped make good the prophecy of Sir Ian Botham after his team's thumping innings defeat of an out-gunned, cold-numbed Sri Lanka at Leeds 18 months earlier, that England was bound to return to the world’s number one Test ranking.

To add some context, this means David Warner has a higher IQ than the following individuals:

>I think day-night tests are a good idea, but I don't think they can hugely increase popularity.
There's been one so far against Poo Peeland and the numbers were frankly mind boggling.
Normally a Test match against Poo Peeland gets <5k people attending a day, no matter what venue it is. During the D/N match they got atleast 45k/day in a 48k capacity ground.
The peak TV audience on the third nights play was 3.5M people. For reference, the AFL and NRL grand finals both get about ~4M. The BBL final had a peak of ~1.8M. And this is a Test match against fucking Poo Peeland we are talking about...
There are obviously some mitigating factors: it was the first one so there was a gimmick factor and Australia is by far the best place in the world to play them conditions wise (no dew, not cold at night etc). But the indicators are pretty clear.
If the Pom who posted this is still here:

Most of the players are Malays and Tamils. A lot of the Indian/Pakistani and other migrants play it but they only make a small part of the playing demographic.

India is full of manlets bowling 120 kp/h so the broadcasters are making them look better than they are otherwise it would be a bad look.
Don't get me wrong, I think both McClenaghan and Southee are solid bowlers in pyjama on their day, but neither of them are 140+ bowlers and you know that as well as I do. Milne is also a 140-145 bowler.
>>67975617
Milne is definitely 150+ but generally for no longer than 6 or so overs. Matt Henry was also hitting 140-145 in the last pyjama tours so he could be getting up there. Really wish Bond was coaching him still because Henry literally looks like a less injury prone clone.
I was genuinely surprised at the McClenaghan one but Southee has hit 140 regularly before. Not really in the last couple of years though. It probably still is rigged though.
>you now remember Starc bowling """"160"""" kph
>>67975632

He was hovering between 130-135 in both the games he played against Australia home and away. Bang average bowler. Still faster than Boult and Southee mind you who were often in the 125-130 range.
>Really wish Bond was coaching him still because Henry literally looks like a less injury prone clone.

Maybe that's a notable event in Poo Peeland, where the pinnacle of fast bowling was Bond's 16 whole tests

>Isn't Starc like 150
He can bowl the odd ball at that pace but his average is in the 140-145 range. It's averages that matter, not outliers.
I assume I am talking to Daniel because you are spouting his exact opinions, but if I am wrong then correct me. Here's a protip: stop rating bowlers on their actions, it's borderline irrelevant. If you are rating Matt Henry because his action reminds you of Bond, then that is a mistake (if I am wrong, tell me why you do rate him). Mark Craig's action is very similar to Graeme Swann and I don't think that really requires an explanation. For me Henry just doesn't do anything that well. New Zealand has better players.

You know what the problem is? You spend countless hours watching plethora of irrelevant cricket competition and think you are informed because of it. The issue is that because you have never played the sport at a competitive level you don't understand what the difference is between club cricketers and international cricketers.
The are scores of amateur cricketers in Australia who can bowl at around the 130 mark. The difference between them and the guys like Siddle and Bird who bowl at the same pace is that they don't have much control of the ball out of the hand. Matt Henry falls into that category and that's why Boult and Southee are better than him.
I asked you to to explain to me WHY you rate Matt Henry. And you didn't because you can't. He doesn't have any pace. He doesn't have great control over the seam so isn't much of a swing or seam bowler. No great accuracy or consistency. As I said, he is great at nothing.

I don't even understand why you have such a fucking obsession with having """"correct"""" opinions, when there is LITERALLY no such thing.
>>67975857
Holy fuck, this literally just proves that you have never ever watched him in your life. His action is a fucking carbon copy of Bond's. That's what I mean by a Shane Bond clone. Not that he is as good as Shane Bond, you mongoloid.
If you had even watched a single game with Matt Henry in it you would realise that that's what I was implying by that statement. You put "Matt Henry" and "Shane Bond" in the same sentence and the immediate connection is the bowling action, not their quality. If, of course, you had seen both bowl.

You have officially become a self-parody.

After all this time you'd think that you'd be able to pick a statscunt post.
Found her lads
>>67976003
That's the concern.
Really don't like cricket on the subcontinent. Test series in NZ, SA, AUS and ENG are way better.

Based Racist Brit
I like you. Subtle gimmick. Can you please stay and become a member of our poomunity so the era of krazyreddit can OFFICIALLY fucking end?
>>67976017
What made you think I was addressing him? Statschink only lurks lebbit, he doesn't actually post there.
>>67976040
I actually do. The spectacle is often shit but it's my 2nd favourite after AUS vs SA for autistic reasons (it's one of the toughest tests of skills).
I think back to Australia vs Sri Lanka in Galle 2011. Mike Hussey's 95 and Mahela's century that game still rank as two of the top5 innings I have ever seen. Some of the South Africa vs India pitches last year had the potential for performances of that magnitude but no one stepped up. Maybe that's a sign that batting skills are going out of the game, I don't know. Rahane scored twin centuries in the last game but that was the flatest wicket.
>>67976084
The person you (You)d in that post is not the person you were arguing with, mate.
Will Cook get his 10K in this match or will shit lanka collapse on purpose tactically, as they are 100% going to lose this but have a better chance of winning the next match if Cook is still scratching around for that milestone and will probably get himself out
>>67975782
The mining meme isn't a big thing anymore. All the cashed up bogans are going broke and the civility is increasing exponentially
>>67976142
He's literally commanding his bowlers to bowl crap so that he can get it desu
>>67975849
You literally do all the time on reddit m8
>>67975977
For some reason spinners seem to get better after an Asian tour. Maybe they learn about how to bowl to a pitch or something, I don't know.
>>67976159
Woakes must have missed the memo then. Been genuinely impressed with that lad this game. He's suddenly gone from a shitter to a guy who consistently puts the ball in awkward positions.
I feel bad for Wood now. The lad has gone from a first pick to a third since his injury.
>>67976179
which is why I want to see rashid play, sure he's not top tier but he nearly got us a cheeky late win in one of the UAE games, he's carried drinks for too long considering how long our batting line up is now I can't see him being worse than Ali when Ali did even less in the UAE
It Begins™
>>67976191
>Woakes is the fastest English bowler
what a time to be alive
>>67976159
this desu, cook is a cricket genius
>>67976197
ali's a bit more dependable than rashid, though this is generally down to experience and becomes circular logic to keep ali
Imagine batting below Herath in a test match batting line up. I wonder how it feels to be that shit
>>67976197
Especially considering he's a solid bat too. 10 FC hundreds.
>>67976211
Woakes has been faster for years now you seething casual, he was shit because he lost most of his swing with the added pace.
>>67976214
This has to be one of the worst tails in cricket history, certainly the worst of all modern cricket teams.
Herath is a genuine no11 (and a below average one at that) and he is batting @ 8. Kek.
>>67976197
Rashid is elite.
Bowls too slowly for boreblock though.
>>67976213
Yorkshire didn't help rashid desu, he was in and around england when he was younger and his bowling dropped off a bit, rather than just sticking through it they pushed him up the order and made him focus on his batting more so his bowling went downhill a bit. he's not consistent but he's a matchwinner who can run through a team and obviously hes a very useful meme20 bowler
>>67976224
england in the 90s had 4 proper number 11's at one point with tufnell taking the prize of being the worst of those 4 and batting at 11, that was probably the worst but this side is close
>bitchstow

I love how before every series he always says in the media "i am a good keeper now i s-swear"
I mean it's not his fault they pick him in that role, but it just seems silly when they can pick Buttler who is a good player
>>67976230
i agree about rashid, i think england do need to start giving him some tests as he will probably become better and more dependable over time, while having more natural ability as a spinner than ali
but the selectors atm probably see ali as the safer option and it will remain this way as to challenge this rashid needs test matches, which he isn't getting
>>67976257
Buttler clearly needed a break from test cricket, his batting was all over the place at the end he didn't know whether to attack, which he should have done or try and become a proper batsman. he's clearly the better keeper though, hopefully he comes back and just starts playing like he does in ODI's, which is exactly why he was picked his first class record isn't great. would prefer him to whack a quick 80 every now and then than stall around for 20 odd runs, he would start to score more because he's really scary to bowl at and teams would give him too much respect
>>67976197
Le piss on bouncers man is mentally stable again, so I'd unironically like him back over those two

Honestly, drop Vince, make Bitchstow a specialist batsman and bring back Buttler as a keeper
>>67976309
who would you have at 3?
>>67976309
Yeah exactly
Buttler could be like Haddin except not a dogshit wicketkeeper
>>67976309
This could be a decent idea. Bat Moeen above Buttler because he's evidently better at 7.
>>67976322
Bring back Ballance, push Root up to 3.
>>67976322

Root
Bairstow
Vince/Bell

Buttler (wk)

>>67976322
Compton for now. If he stays shit, look at moving Root up and bringing Cuckfield or someone back into the middle order. I still unironically support Lyth opening and Hales at 3 too.
>>67976333
Ballance is poo lad. Agreed on Root though
>>67976333
Moeen does better higher up from what I've seen, so I'd agree there
>>67976339
>Bell
>>67976339
Hales has been good this series.
>>67976344
Hales at 3 is a good call. Compton hasn't really used his chances well.
>compton under the helmet
>cuckfield, with a catching percentage of 33, in the slips
Fuck they really hate compo don't they
>>67976339
>not playing Hales after he's done well in bowler friendly conditions, doing what everyone said he wouldn't

>>67976357
>Hales has been good this series.

he disintegrated when he played real bowlers. But I'll be fucking ecstatic if he is somehow in the team come the next Ashes.
>>67976366
>all those catches Burns dropped last summer
Still seething. The dumb cunt was looking at the bowler instead of the batsman too. That's literally the first rule of short leg, and he broke it.
>>67976339
Nah Hales is looking good. Obviously this isn't exactly the most dangerous attack but he's evidently not the total meme everyone thought he was.
>>67976368
I'd wait and see how he does against Pakistan before writing him off for good tbf. No one made runs in the South Africa series.
>>67976368
Sri Lanka's bowlers weren't terrible before the injuries hit.
How much longer can Jimmy go on, the next ashes will be has last surely?
>>67976388
If they don't bowl 145kph and average 21 with a SR of 36 they are literally Scott Boland-tier and wouldn't get a game in Sydney grade cricket lad.
I'd support Ballance coming back into the test team. His form dropped off, but he got about 6 consecutive 50s from debut. He didn't magically become a shit player after that.
>Bell

I was thinking of the Ashes cycle. Woakes would (and always has) get slaughtered in Australia.
>>67976377
as >>67976379 said, I'm completely ignoring this series. If he produces against Pakistan I'll start to listen to you.
> No one made runs in the South Africa series
Messrs Bairstow and Stokes would like a word with you.
>>67976405
Ballance has a higher average than Cook. The reason he was "dropped" was more because Bitchstow was carving up county at like 130 average than him being explicitly bad.
>>67976420
Cape Town was a highway tbf. Plus they were facing Morris and Piedt lmao.
>>67976431
his technique was shit against left-armers and he refused to change it.
>>67976398
Boland is quantitatively 3x better than any of these ""bowlers""
>>67976433
Morris isn't that bad. He'd walking into Poo Peeland's team if Wagner can. Piedt can't be helped because >muh quotas.
>>67976413
If that shitter overtakes McGod I will literally end my own life.
Has he beaten Walsh yet?
>>67976439

Confirmed for watching neither the the NZ-ENG series or Ashes. Boult and Starc made him look like a literal retard.
>>67976455
