Bobby Mac said some scouts he's talked to said Matthews would've been No. 3 last year, while other scouts said that Matthews will have a greater impact than Eichel. Basically, it seems like it's going to be a discussion over the next few years at the very least until one of them cements himself.
My bet is Eichel probably ends up producing more points because he plays more of a meme game, but Matthews plays more of a Kopitar/Toews two-way game shutting down other top lines.

Just a prediction, Eichel will be a better post season player than Mathews.
Mathews will be a Stamkos type "superstar" that tends to chokes when the games get tough and Eichel will develop into a Kesler type player. A good two way player that is an important part of a team and can perform under pressure.
This is based solely on my own observations after watching them both play. Mathews will be the offensive playmaker stud but Eichel shows more promise in understanding the two-way game as well as handling pressure from the big boys.

Younger players always go later than older players of the same skill level. Teams want potential and "proven" results. Eichel being a late 96 while Matthews was (almost) a normal 97 would have given Eichel the edge. Now with one more year of "proving" Matthews' talent is more know. We have a lot of prospects that will make great 2nd-4th line career players and some really good 2nd and 3rd pairing defensemen, but Holland is too worried about the meme ass streak. We need to just suck for a year or two, accept it, wait to unload some bad contracts, then make a push to either make shit happen at the draft or make some trades.
As it stands, aside from Larkin, we are FUCKED without Hank and Pasha, and Larkin isn't good or experienced enough yet, let alone big enough, to deal with these teams shifting their best defensemen onto covering him.
