Chris Sale in 2016 is defying every pitching stat that sabremetrics have ever come up with. This year, he is intentionally striking out less batters! Instead, he is inducing more weak contact in order to preserve his velocity for later innings when he may actually need to strike someone out, or simply to pitch deeper in the game. If you subjectively follow the player, you cannot doubt that he has significantly improved this year, and you probably wouldn't argue that he could easily strike out more than 32 batters through 5 games, but stats like xFIP, BABIP, kwERA, and SIERA have lowered for him. One might argue that it is his defense behind him has drastically improved, but that doesn't mean that metrics meant to do all the analyzing should punish him for it. Inducing weak contact is not flukey, lucky, or a bad thing in any way, but it is a quality that is grossly overlooked by the stats that attempt to objectively define good pitching.

Since it's becoming more and more apparent that seemingly everyone in MLB uses PEDs, they need to figure out a formula for punishing them based on type and dosage. Even leave a legal level of use, but reserve the long suspensions for repeat offenders, ring leaders (A-Roid), and guys that really hit it hard like Bonds, McGwire, and Arrieta. If they keep going with the broken windows method, just about every big name in baseball is going to be tarnished, and that is horrible for the game.
