I've never posted on here before because I'm from /b/ but I thought that what I have to say will interest a baseball community more than random /b/tards.
This thanksgiving, I spent it with family including an uncle of mine that works for the San Diego Padres. His job isn't anything crazy cool but its front office stuff and he gets to know all of the crazy shit that goes on with the Padres. My uncle is a real honest guy who doesn't lie and loves his job, so when he told me this story I was blown away. Something happened in the Padres clubhouse this year that caused lots of tension with the team. I'll sum it up as simply as possible.
After a game in May, the team was in the clubhouse doing their thing. Kimbrel got the save that day and everyone was in a good mood and stuff. Justin Upton was a favorite among the players, everyone liked him and thought he was a cool guy. So basically, the guys were fucking around and Upton was making fun of Kimbrel and that stance he does when he pitches. My uncle didn't give me the name, but another player came behind Upton (who only had a towel on) and put his hand down the back and pretty much fingered Upton's ass which didn't go well at all.
Upton went crazy and wanted to murder the guy and was choking him on the floor and other stuff. It took a bunch of guys to separate them but Upton was berserk and wanted to finish the guy. It even caused Upton to tell higher ups that he wanted to be traded ASAP because he was done with the team. He never got traded though and the guy who did that to Upton wasn't a big player of anything, just like a role player.
My uncle says the guy is still on the Padres and players are uneasy about him because he's single and never around women or anything. Basically they think he's gay but they have no proof aside from him grabbing Upton's ass and not liking women. All my uncle said is that the guy is not an important player, more like a role player.

So, if the Cubs don't trade Soler, the only real long-term question is CF. I get that Almora may still be special (could be good Gerardo Parra or a non-SB version of Lorenzo Cain) but what if he fucks up this year at AAA? He can't be relied on for 2017. I can't imagine what Theo and Co. have planned at all.
I'm feeling good about 2B. In 2014, Baez showed his serious home run power but made no contact. In 2015, Baez cooled on the dingers and made lots of good contact with lots of good defense everywhere you put him. I would absolutely be comfortable if Starlin got traded and Baez was allowed to play the whole season. What would stop him from at least being a 3+ fWAR player? Power or contact, he will hit decently enough to start. Plus, the defense is strong.
Even when Ian Desmond was shit this year, he was worth at least 2 fWAR. The last three years, he's been in the 3.4-3.9 fWAR range. So, why can't Baez do the same?
