I would rather take the B option because it will provide more depth for the future. Cain is probably done at this point, Peavy is extremely close, Heston was a bit flukey and is a 4-5 starter at best, and Petit is not a starter. Even if Giants only get 2/3 when it comes to Fister, Leake, Samardzija, I find it still better than signing just Greinke. Plus, with the B option or a variation of it, Giants could still get outfield help as well.

Greinke is at the end of home stretch of his career. He was one of the most dominant pitchers this season, and a lot of people are going to be trying to sign him with big money because of this. His production within the next couple of seasons is going to decrease, so it makes sense that he'd take the most valuable contract. Bonds + just greenies probably wouldn't have broken the home run record, because even though Bonds was still an excellent hitter for average, he was getting older and the power would have faded. Steroids helped a great hitter keep his power. With Aaron, it was the other way around: Greenies helped a strong young player focus on making contact.
