The Eurocup final is a perfect example of why soccer will probably never be popular in the US.
Not because it's soccer, bear with me here...
Imagine all the young kids who play soccer in the US.
Soccer is the most popular sport to play among kids aged 2-12.
Imagine all those kids being excited and watching this game with their dad, or uncle, or grandfather, who have probably never played or watched soccer in their lives.
The kid wants his family to watch it with him, to show them how fun it is.
The parents or father figures watch the players run around for 2 hours. They wait for something exciting to happen, because their kid is excited and they want to enjoy something their kid likes with them.
They realize nothing is happening, they don't understand why the score is 0-0 the whole time. They expect something to happen, but when it doesn't, they lose hope that the sport is something they could ever enjoy watching.
They start thinking "Sure it's a safe game to play, but my old man played and watched manly sports, I can't let my son get too into this semen-slurping"
So they gently prod the kid, as the score remains 0-0 after having watched 3 interesting moments in the last 90 minutes.
"Hey son, I think the cubs are playing right now"
The kid, seeing that a player is currently sitting down on the field resting while the game is still being played, sees his parent's dissapointment and boredom, and wanting to please them and be like them, begins to lose hope in the sport.
"Okay dad, yeah lets watch some baseball instead"
And thus, the kid no longer cares as much about soccer as he did before, and once he gets to high school, he switches sports to please his old man or family members or friends, and never plays or watches soccer again.
That is the story of soccer in America.

In sports, there are events (goals) and suspense (impact of an event).
Lots and lots of events (goals) in basketball. But the impact of an event is low. Unles you're in the final minutes one hoop usually means shit.
In soccer, one goal or the threat of a goal creates a lot of suspense. There can be suspense the entire match, without a goal being scored. And then penalties can decide everything. A fucking suspense fest.

I was rooting for France but now that Ronaldo is out I don't feel like watching the game anymore
British female here with no previous interest in football. Recently moved job and everyone in the office is young and very interested in football (Soccer). 75% male 25% female office and I am the ONLY person who doesn't have a 'team' to support.
I have been watching the Euros and I watched the last world cup. I know how the game is played. But I have no idea about English football and everyone keeps asking what team I support.
So, can /sp/ help me pick a team that I can show an interest in? I am not exactly going to go to the stadium to watch them but as I have no idea who is good or bad I don;t know who to follow.
My requirements are:
- Decentish team so I am not mocked all the time
- Not controversial. I know Man city hate man united, I want a team people either generally like (Like Iceland was) or don;t care about.
- One that people have heard of but is not too mainstream. I don;t mean to sound liek a hipster, I just want a team who I don;t need to check up on everyday.
- One that peopel on /sp/ like so I can pop in here to get updates on their progress.
- One with cute or outstanding players so I don't need to remember the names of all 11, just the great ones (Ronaldo etc)
