On top of that, just because you are too obtuse to see a reason why it should be kept around doesn't mean there aren't any reasons why it should be kept around. If this was years ago I'd have agreed with that. The site has however grown and with more people comes more posts, which means that threads move and 404 faster than before. This has several implications so I think a clear indicator that you've been replied to does have a practical merit. That it has become a meme is only natural since almost everyone sees it.
