The answer is MLP.
When MLP first became a thing, /co/ became a warzone for the entire site. The people who watched the show were pretty quickly corralled into a general but everybody wanted to come poke them with a stick. People were weirded out and/or annoyed by people watching My Little Pony, so trolls on other boards used MLP pics to rile them up constantly Those people would then make threads on other boards or make 5 or 6 generals to get them booted off the site. Eventually somebody told moot that if he made a pony board that the whole MLP thing would die, so he did, which is what basically led to bronies being born.
Then Homestuck came and the same thing started to repeat itself: segregating them into a general, people creating false flag threads to try to get them booted, etc. /co/ was so scared of creating another /mlp/ that they were ready to self destruct to prevent it.
At the same time, though, you had tumblr's cartoon community start to take off. Those people started coming to 4chan after Homestuck started, and other "fandoms" followed. Those outsiders completely changed the board's culture- they brought their thin-skinned rules lawyering and their "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" attitudes with them, and it left everybody pissed off.
There's also the fact that there's a mod by the name of Redwood who loves /co/ and is a tremendous tumblrist.
People are being very vocal about things on /co/ because there are a lot of bad decisions being made in the comics and cartoon industries; DC got a massive reboot that shit all over their continuity and Marvel is a fucking joke. There are also a lot of things being put into those shows or comics deals with politics, which a lot of people get incredibly defensive about.
So no, /co/ will never recover until it gets rid of its tumblr users and the mods learn that people are allowed to have differing opinions.

A while back you created a board called /aco/. This board was used as a dumping ground by the mods of another board called /d/ to push out Western art from their board.
The problem is that /d/, as an alternative fetish board, was largely sustained by having a pool of fetish art from both the East and West. No one on /d/ cared where the art was from.
/aco/ posters are forced to share a board with /d/ and hate it. /h/ was made because /h/ posters didn't want to share a board with alternative fetishes. By forcing this against the will of the users, two boards have been adversely affected.
Beyond the two posts on what is allowed here in the first couple of days in October there has been no response from any higher ups about this mess they made.
/aco/ was said to be a trial board. As it stands, that trial is a failure. Users from many boards refuse to go to /aco/ now due to the Alternative Fetish art there, while most users have abandoned /d/ completely.
People want /aco/ to be a Western counterpart to /h/, and want /d/ to be as it was for years. Currently neither board is happy. Both boards are now in need of serious attention.

I've been a /d/eviant for over ten years now. It was my first board. In the time I've spent lurking it, I can honestly tell you that "western" art was very rarely hated on. Someone posted a picture of a stick figure? Sure, I understand and agree with its deletion. Someone posted a pretty damn well-drawn piece of art, someone else reported it simply because it wasn't drawn in a style they liked and then bitched non-stop about it? That's the only problems I ever remember.
Bottom line is, the mods are using /aco/'s existence as an excuse to suddenly enforce a rule that no one liked in the first place, and are sending us to /aco/. The /aco/rns can't handle /d/'s fetishes and want us to go back to /d/, but we can't. Because of this, /d/ is pretty much /d/ead.

I'm sure you've seen this request already, but I'd like to know if you have any plans to split /v/ into /v/-Western Vidya and /v/-Japanese Vidya.
Everyday at nearly every hour, both fanbases are at each other's throats in /v/ and it leads to a lot of heated debates that often require moderator intervention.
I think that by splitting these two fanbases into their own boards would help quell the constant feuding. There will no doubt be a lot of crossboard shitposting, but it will be much easier to moderate.

I'm almost certain it's a committed and aggressive breed of shitters giving us a bad name though. Majority of us aren't like that but they're probably NEETs so they have the time to shitpost with authority and make everyone believe they represent /a/. And yes, ego plays a large role in this as sad as they sounds. Because 4chan used to have a lot of history and easter eggs scattered around.
A lot of old sites have pages that almost no one visits but are left up just because they dont take up much space.
The text boards, /fk/, /z/, etc were fun easter eggs that were a reminder of older times.
It's a disturbing trend somewhat recently to just start removing all this stuff for no good reason.
I wouldnt be surprised if the rules page, faq, and archives are all rewritten and have sections deleted soon.
