We have the only subduction zone fault just chilling outside or waters. Subduction zones are what caused the major earthquake in the Indian ocean that killed thousands and all the Japanese ones.
The Cascadia subduction zone is serious shit. When The Big One comes, it could be 9.0 and level Seattle and other areas. Unlike Japan, we are not prepared for it, structurally. The coast will be washed away with tsumanis as well.

This was shallow, vertical, and right under people's feet, the first M6.3 had the same level of ground acceleration as the 1995 Kobe quake. Both were among the 4 recorded shindo 7 quakes in Japan.

ALSO: Yellowstone is extremely, extremely unlikely to erupt for all you happening people, as is the Long Island Caldera. HOWEVER I believe the Mammoth Lake Caldera may be a bit more likely to erupt (not likely at all but less unlikely), which IIRC would wreck most of California and some of Nevada/Arizona and Oregon. So maybe look forward to that.
Chances are without meme magic though Southern California gets hit with maybe an 8M quake at the most and then gets rekt with a tsunami, which would be quite entertaining without driving the human race extinct.

Our restrictions are much laxer than Chile's. Mostly things like "don't build things over three floors tall on top of a landfill". And we also have a ton of ancient houses (100-400+years) because of the way in which we urbanized. Note that this is the strongest Earthquake here since 1947 and the most lethal since 1868.
The government will definitely put some stronger ones in place after this, though. They will no doubt also use this to massively raise taxes.

It's still a good idea though, you never know when or where a quake will come, and you would likely scream yourself hoarse before help comes. That's why I have mine, just in case.

Basically, because of the nature of supervolcanoes they are much easier to predict and measure changes in beforehand than smaller ones, and as a result most scientists agree it is extremely unlikely for the Yellowstone volcano to erupt in at least many centuries.
Also, again because of the fact that there are far more warning signs on a far grander scale with supervolcanoes, humanity would have at least several weeks notice and at most several years before the actual eruption occurs.
Hopefully this comforts some.
