Perhaps in an all out war where all gun owners assembled to fight against the US army on some plain they would lose. But as you may know from history, simply exterminating the people of a given country isn't how you win a war. Otherwise the US would have won Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. withease.
Having firearms ensures that 1) you do not (read: to a lesser extent) rely on police to save you if your life, family or possesions are in imminent danger, and 2) the government, since they will not bomb you, as stated above, has little incentive to go against its own people because it would result in a guerilla war like in Afghanistan, taking its toll on soldiers and morale since they'll be shot at everywhere they go
