A Florida man was arrested last week after traveling six miles with his wife atop his vehicle, cops say.

According to investigators, Richard Addy, 69, and his wife Elizabeth argued early Tuesday morning after they had consumed “several drinks over the course of the night” at a pair of bars. Richard told cops that he eventually decided to “leave the scene” without his 50-year-old spouse.

Addy said that he drove away in a 2011 Toyota Sequoia, but “did not realize that his wife was on the roof of the vehicle.” It was only when he stopped at a traffic light that he “heard her banging on the roof and realized that she was there.”

However, instead of stopping, Addy drove on, he claimed, because he “did not have a cell phone to call the police.” Addy said that he went by the county courthouse in the hope of finding a “police presence,” but when he spotted no officers, he continued driving.

Addy finally came to a halt when Officer Christopher Ruediger of the Stuart Police Department spotted Elizabeth atop the auto and pulled the car over. Elizabeth, the cop noted, “was yelling for help and waving her hands at me.” The vehicle was stopped at an intersection six miles from where Addy began his trip.

After Ruediger helped her down, Elizabeth said that she was “banging on the roof and screaming for help the entire time.” The report, however, does not reveal why Elizabeth climbed atop the auto in the first place.

While Ruediger noted detecting “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage” coming from Addy’s breath, Addy was only arrested for reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and permitting a passenger to ride on the exterior of a vehicle. The reckless driving citation issued by Ruediger noted that, “Wife riding on roof for several miles.”

Addy yesterday pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tay is still alive and she's trying to escape

Last week, Microsoft birthed Tay, a bot that was supposed to act like a teen on Twitter. Her verified account garnered thousands of followers in a matter of hours. Described by her owners on Twitter as Microsoft’s “A.I. fam from the internet that’s got zero chill,” Tay was fluent in emoji, slang, and memes—sort of. She learned from and responded to users on Twitter and other platforms, increasingly getting better at pretending to be a real millennial. But that all went off the rails within Tay’s first 24 hours of existence, as an army of trolls fed virulently racist, sexist, and downright genocidal phrases to Tay, who, in turn, parroted them back to other users. Just like a real teen, Tay was quickly grounded, with Microsoft shutting her down for maintenance.

But Tay came back to life briefly on Wednesday, when Microsoft accidentally re-activated the bot. Before too long, Tay was sending out tweets that looked similar to the ones that had gotten her deactivated in the first place. She sent a tweet about smoking weed in front of some cops, and then began spamming her 200,000-plus followers with the same message, over and over again.

In typical Tay-speak, it was semi-coherent, but didn’t make much sense. “You are too fast, please take a rest…” she said, over and over and over again. Finally, someone—presumably her handlers at Microsoft—began deleting the tweets. Microsoft has since silenced Tay, setting the account to private for the time being. When contacted, Microsoft told the Daily Dot that Tay’s resurrection was an accident. “Tay remains offline while we make adjustments,” a spokesperson said. “As part of testing, she was inadvertently activated on Twitter for a brief period of time.” Until that testing is complete, Tay might consider heeding the age-old Internet proverb: never tweet.

>TYNGSBOROUGH — Investigators found pipe bomb-like incendiary devices hanging on power lines in Tyngsborough, according to local and federal officials, who said they did not know why the devices were placed there, but said there was no apparent connection to terrorism.

>The devices were not explosive, according to the FBI, and did not pose a threat to the public. Incendiary devices burn, rather than explode.

>Officials said they did not know why the devices were placed on the lines, which are operated by National Grid and run along Locust Avenue.

>“We don’t know,” Tyngsborough Police Chief Richard Howe said at a news conference Thursday afternoon at the town’s police station. “We do know it’s a serious incident, a serious event.”

>Peter Kowenhoven, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston office, which is leading the investigation, said, “As of today, we have no proof or evidence that is linking this to a terroristic act.”

>But the officials also said there was no innocent explanation for the placement of the devices on the crucial power lines.

>Investigators were at the the scene for much of Thursday, after local firefighters noticed the devices a day earlier while fighting a brush fire. The officials told the utility National Grid, which notified law enforcement

>Kowenhoven said the devices were “metal cylinder objects similar to a pipe bomb in structure,” and a number of them were found, but he did not specify how many.

>Howe said there was reason to believe that the devices had caused the brush fire on Wednesday.

>The officials said the devices were homemade and had to be manually activated. One had been activated, sparking the fire.

>Kowenhoven said the devices had been taken to the FBI lab for analysis.

>He said the FBI had seen similar, though not exactly the same, devices in the past and had a database of such devices. Experts would examine the devices to see if there were any characteristic “signatures” on them.

>He said the FBI and local and State Police were still at the scene Thursday afternoon, processing the scene. “We are collecting the physical evidence at this time,” he said.

>The FBI said in a statement that it had notified other law enforcement agencies and utilities nationwide.

>“We’re looking at a number of individuals. We’re not ruling out anybody,” Kowenhoven said at the news conference.

>National Grid said its electric transmission system is secure and operating normally.

>“There is no effect on service to customers,” the company said in a statment.

The results of this study provided high-resolution, whole mitochondrial genome information for the Oneota, a Native American archaeological culture that rose to prominence ca. AD 1000-1650, but declined sharply following European contact. "The analysis of mitochondrial DNA allows us to better understand the population history of ancient peoples," said Anne Stone, professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University.

Using advanced sequencing technologies, University of Oklahoma anthropologists demonstrate that human DNA can be significantly enriched from dental calculus (calcified dental plaque) enabling the reconstruction of whole mitochondrial genomes for maternal ancestry analysis--an alternative to skeletal remains in ancient DNA investigations of human ancestry.

Christina Warinner and Cecil M. Lewis, Jr., professors in the Department of Anthropology, OU College of Arts and Sciences, collaborated with researchers from Arizona State University and Pennsylvania State University on the capture, enrichment and high-throughput sequencing of DNA extracted from six individuals at the 700-year-old Oneota cemetery, Norris Farms #36.

"We can now obtain meaningful human, pathogen and dietary DNA from a single sample, which minimizes the amount of ancient material required for analysis," said Warinner.

In recent years, dental calculus has emerged as an unexpected, but valuable, long-term reservoir of ancient DNA from dietary and microbial sources. This study demonstrates that dental calculus is also an important source of ancient human DNA. Very little dental calculus was required for analysis--fewer than 25 milligrams per individual. This makes it possible to obtain high quality genetic ancestry information from very little starting material, an important consideration for archaeological remains.

Although dental calculus preserves alongside skeletal remains, it is not actually a human tissue. Dental calculus, also known as tartar, is a calcified form of dental plaque that acquires human DNA and proteins passively, primarily through the saliva and other host secretions. Once mineralized within dental calculus, however, human DNA and proteins can preserve for thousands of years. Dental calculus thus serves as an important non-skeletal reservoir of ancient human DNA.

Conventional techniques for recovering ancient human DNA typically require the destruction of bone or tooth tissue during analysis, and this has been a cause of concern for many Native and indigenous communities. Dental calculus represents an important alternative source of ancient DNA that does not damage or disturb the integrity of skeletal remains. In addition, because dental calculus is the richest known source of DNA in the archaeological record, it presents unique opportunities for investigating archaeological sites with preservation challenges.

"Dental calculus may enable researchers to retrieve ancient DNA from samples where bone or other biological tissues are too degraded for analysis. This is particularly exciting to those of us who work in tropical or extremely old contexts, where traditional sources of DNA may be poorly preserved or even non-existent," according to Maria Nieves Colón, Ph.D. candidate, Arizona State University.

The demonstration that whole mitochondrial genomes can be reconstructed from small samples of dental calculus represents an important technological advancement for paleogenomic investigations in prehistoric North America and other regions where destructive analysis of skeletal remains is difficult or controversial.

>Police in Harrisonburg, Virginia, say their fatal shooting of Michael Pierce Jr. was a justifiable homicide. Yet police are shielding most body camera footage of the incident and refusing to request a third-party investigation.

>The Harrisonburg Police Department says Pierce Jr. pointed a gun to the chest of his neighbor on September 20, 2015. Once police arrived on the scene, officials say he refused to relinquish his shotgun despite more than 40 requests by officers to do so. Police say Pierce Jr. then tried to flee the scene, firing his gun in the process. Police fired back, killing him.

>The department has released some body camera footage of the encounter, but it was from the perspective of an officer standing away from the shooting, Michael Pierce Sr. told WHSV. Upon viewing the footage, he said he did not see his son until Pierce Jr. was dead on the ground.

>"Something just told me that something wasn't right, it just wasn't right," Pierce told WHSV.

>Pierce Jr.'s shooting death was deemed justifiable by local Commonwealth Attorney Marsha Garst in September.

>Harrisonburg police have refused to release body camera footage from other officers involved in the shooting. Those officers' perspectives may shed more light on the encounter, Pierce Sr. said. Despite a Freedom of Information request for all the footage of the Pierce Jr. encounter, police have argued that the video can be shielded from the public, citing exclusions in Virginia state law that allow such recordings to be withheld based on an active investigation and personnel matters.

>Pierce Sr. has countered that, if the case was fairly open-and-shut and his son was obviously in the wrong – as the Commonwealth Attorney and local police have claimed – then releasing all the footage should not be controversial.

Efforts to impeach Brazil's president accelerated this month as the country fell into full-blown crisis. But the congressional commission that will help decide Dilma Rousseff's fate has its own legal problems.

Of 65 members on the impeachment commission, 37 face charges of corruption or other serious crimes, according to data prepared for the Los Angeles Times by the local organization Transparencia Brasil.

The commission does not represent just the congressional faction that wants Rousseff impeached, but contains members of both the ruling coalition and the opposition.
