So the DEVO lore states that Whip It was the beginning of the end for DEVO. They were shocked and surprised it went so well with audiences, displacing their desired singles: Freedom of Choice and Girl U Want. Whip It made them a one-hit-wonder and destroyed any hopes the band had to be taken seriously.
I'm finding this hard to believe. If you listen to the entire album, Whip It is obviously more produced and polished than the other songs. Jerry even went to WB and told them they wanted to make a video for Whip It, which made the song even more popular than before...

I always thought Cold War or Snowball should have been the big one on the Freedom of Choice album
>>52062886
>Jerry even went to WB and told them they wanted to make a video for Whip It
I thought the thing was that they already had music videos for their shit to begin with, and that's why MTV was big into them?
But yeah, imagine what could have been. What would the 4th album have sounded like if Whip It didn't make them backlash against their success? I love New Traditionalists, but it's probably the weakest of their 'good' albums.

Well, the "lore" is half right. Whip It was definitely designed with a bit more pop sensitivity than the others (although Girl U Want is an 8/10 synth punk track) on the album, but they were definitely surprised when it actually went over well. If you've read what Mark and Jerry wrote about it, it was supposed to be a wry take on Pynchon's poetry, so it certainly wasn't just designed as a dumb catchy novelty song. But somehow people liked it a lot, and then Warner Bros suddenly took notice...

What are some good non-rock concept albums?
I mean, I love Thick as a Brick, ITCotCK, and a lot of Prog Rock stuff, but i'm curious if any other genres have some good stuff i'm missing out on.
"Concept albums" don't exist. It's a myth perpetrated by autistic rockists.

Deltron 3030 s/t comes to into mind, but I'm sure you've already heard of it.
This is closer to symphonic new wave than anything rock

its inconceivable how underrated and misunderstood this album is, this is their masterpiece and only people who listen to DG for their instrumentation think otherwise
ok
>>52058705
DG+EXM > TMS > GP > NLDW >>> NOTM
>>52058705
But I DO listen to thier instrumentation most, and it's just barely behind GP for me.
what the fuck has happened to this retarded bitch? she looks like she's constantly on some drugs and her music is shit
to me, actor was a fantastic album and soon after that it was a heavy downfall
the way she looks and writes new music is disgusting
also david byrne is a retarded old fool who definitely had bad influences on her but holy fuck nigger this has gone too far
i don't think she could come back to marry me/actor days, too bad what a fucking waste
I saw her play live last night. Horrible show. Every song sounded the same and she kept putting on this bizarre act of pretending to be some kind of robot.
she has the look on her face that says she bullies the fuck out of her backing band constantly

Idk if anyone gets winter vibes from this but back in 2012 I was listening to it a ton during the winter so I kind of associate it with winter.

Nightly Music Production Thread: Mixing With Headphones is like Having a Long Distance Relationship edition
Ask question, post work in progress, share tips, fall into a crippling depression when you realize your mixing will never be as good as your favorite producer
>>52063653
my mixing fucking sucks and i also don't really understand what you mean by the edition name
h-help?
>>52063784
Not OP, but long distance relationships never work or so they sey.
>>52063653
All I can afford are headphones, and honestly they aren't bad for mixing if you learn their biases and have good ears. I test my mixes on my phone, laptop speakers, tablet, friend's car, etc. to figure out if something's fucked up. The general rule is that if it sounds fucked up in an environment built to make your mix sound BETTER, then you've missed something.
I listen Live At Leeds. Fuck! It's pure fucking rock. Good rock. I listen Live At Japan by Deep Purple. But ... Fuck, Live At Leeds rocks the fucking World.
What's the point of live rock albums? Do they play anything differently? Honest question, I've never listened to one
>Good rock
>>52064369
Listen to Live Dead by the Grateful Dead and you'll understand. Live at Leeds though, I don't think has any jamming, it just captures the energy of a great concert on recording.
