I feel as though (even as it is a tried and true fact of the 21st century) that modern music culture has lost its touch on finding talent, but rather focusing on flash and catchy rhythms and beats. We have lost our sense for finding music that tells a story or paints a picture where we get more thought and immersion in music, instead of simply providing a means for us to jump up and down like ideas
My recommendation:
The Active Set
From Southern California. Lead singer is a bit iffy but they have a real familiar feel. Classify themselves as post-modern indie with a nod to the punk era of the 90's. Here's a link to one of my favorites:

Ok, so bear with me.
There are all sorts of memes that most of us don't really have a reason to really understand-- few people stay on /mu/ for more than a year. However, everyone who enters knows what the previous generation liked and instinctually penalizes anyone who speaks ill of it. A similar effect is true vis-a-vis albums. The effect is illustrated in pic related.
By getting a few posters together to adamantly support some position for a few months, then, you can make any opinion seem valid, and direct the course of /mu/ history. This explains the caveman Spongebob meme, Animal Collective, and Neutral Milk Hotel, just to scratch the surface
