I'm thinking that Yo-Yo Ma has performed the highest quality recording's of Bach's cello suites, definitely prefer his pacing of the material as opposed to Rostropovich who burns through the stuff.

Because it is? Jazz has always been five steps ahead of all other popular music. Jazz started innovating and experimenting decades before The Beatles even recorded an album. Nothing popular music has done wasn't done first in jazz.
