How much influence do you think heroin has had on music history? Also.. do any other dope users lurk /mu/? Where are you from, and what kinda gear do you get in your area? Describe your local dope scene. Here in the Seattle area, we only get Mexican black tar. And even though we're far north up from the border, most stuff that makes it up here is fire. Most folks smoke around here, and it seems only the really hardcore users shoot.

No. It's noise pop, some of which has overlaps with shoegaze, but not this album.
no. it's standard-fare slacker indie. it's by no means a bad album, but it's not shoegaze.
maybe you saw someone dismiss Swirlies as simply being "basic alternative rock" and you thought this meant pavement could be shoegaze. they're not.

Definitely not. The guitars sound a bit shoegazey on some songs only because the recording quality is so shitty.

I'm pretty sure the guy would've better understood if you explained how shoegaze was coined in reference to the guitarists focusing on their many fx pedals, and how the genre heavily relies on reverb, delay and looping for layers of sound. Harmonically, the music is often similar to dream-pop, which uses a lot of maj7, min7, maj9 and min9 chords. To the non-musician, this could be explained as sweet-sounding chords tinged with a little tension.
