looking for some inspiration on what i can achieve with my cheap bedroom setup
Focus on getting the most out of everything you have available to you and not on what other's have.
The only album I can think of off the top of my head that was recorded in a bedroom (or at least contains tracks mostly recorded in a bedroom) is I Sold Gold by Aqueduct.

How do I write music like him?
His lyrics are surprisingly straightforward after reading them. It's just his vocal style that makes it sound more dramatic and profound than they really are.

sing in an effeminate voice and use lots of reverb
make a drum loop, play some synths and sing ooohhh aaaahhss on top. soak everything in reverb. there you go

Well, I've been going there and buying stuff for a few years now, and I know almost all of the guys. However, I was going to be doing all of that stuff regardless of whether I ended up working there or not. So, I probably wouldn't be hired if they didn't know me already, but I didn't get to know them specifically to get a job. And yeah we take turns playing whatever we want.
