I'm straight and give off a masculine vibe.
When I was younger, gay men from all age groups would often check out.
Occasionally, I'd even be approached by older men and propositioned money in return of implied sexual favors while I'd be walking about town midday minding my own business in a reputable corner of town.
Now, as an adult, I look even better than I did in my younger days but I no longer look boyish and have a more mature face. But all the attention from gay men has stopped.
Do gay men have an exclusive preference for young men or is it just more intimidating to probe out a mature looking man?
I understand that youth is an aphrodisiac. Most straight men prefer younger women but they still check beautiful older women. Of course I have to admit that heterosexual men rarely worry about getting their asses kicked if they get caught ogling a pretty woman.
I also understand that some men are very homophobic and feel threatened if they catch a guy looking at them. It's a gamble straight men don't have to take.

Younger men definitely get the largest share of the market. By a lot. I think that on the sites I went from a reliable catch of several hundred messages accumulating around the clock to eventually like 75 at one point over the course of 18-to-22. And turning 20 was probably the biggest downturn and then 21 would probably be the next. It pisses me off that I didn't make a career out of it - any gay guy could, youth is a rare commodity. And yeah. There are some people who just won't fuck you if you aren't 18 or 19...

Personally, I feel more comfortable when someone who knows my sexuality makes a gay joke. It lets me know they're not dancing around talking about it. I get sick of people afraid to say something around me.

I think one of the issues (especially in work/professional environments) is that in a lot of cases they could actually get in trouble for making a slightly off-color remark, so it makes everyone really paranoid.
