Funny thing is that there are certain tests to see where you are on the scale of sexuality that if you've had ANY homosexual contact it rates you as bisexual. Personally I think a one time encounter that you didn't like allows you to still be straight.

I started HRT a little after turning 20 and I seem to pass. While I'm not completely happy with how I look and still see more masculine traits in myself than I would a cis girl and seeing really feminine cis girls is like "triggering" I've not been misgendered in years, only in the start of transition I did.
Honestly if you start post-puberty the results are dependent on genetics and how much effort you put in.
There are a few unfortunate people who start HRT at 18 or 19 and will never pass because of height, facial structure, large shoulders, etc.
There are also a few lucky people who start HRT at 26 or 27 and still eventually pass.
