So my father gave me his Hi-Power as a graduation gift.
The gun has never been shot in 30 years and the nearest range is 1 hour away from my home so i haven't shot it yet.
I do however have some 9mm fmj with it and i decided to dry fire and test the gun a little.
When i put the magazine in and rack the slide the first round goes in easily but if i do it again the rounds always jam and i have failures to extract.
My question is this a good way to know if a gun is reliable or not?

Most likely a worn out extractor spring (No 5 in pic).
Another thing it could be is a broken extractor look to see if the hook part is damaged (No 3 in pic)

Using 5.45x39 surplus out of a 14" AR, what distance should I zero my scope at? Googled and pretty much everyone said zero for 100 but I don't have a 100 yd range. I know when I was in the military we simply zeroed our rifles at 35 yds (IIRC) so we could get on target when we went to range, which is where we did the fine tuning, but that's it.

Im not sure about 545 but in a 556 ar the 50 yard zero is close to a 200 yard zero so anything in between is pretty close
