On this subject, I am strongly in favor of architectural preservation but O think a lot of people just seem to get confused when this is brought up. They just think "It's old so it should be preserved," even if the structure in question is total garbage. It's like there is no middle ground. If I took a shit 100 years ago, they would want to spend thousands to put it in a museum. I'd go so far as to say the majority of older buildings are not architecturally significant and we'd be better off demoing the if money allows. Many old stick frame houses in particular are just not special, are often poorly built, have shitty layouts, etc. I like to retain the style cues in certain neighborhoods but preservation of insignificant structures is often just "save it because its old" nonsense.

I am planning to see a professional soon enough, I saw one when I was younger but he said it wasn't severe enough to justify any major action yet. It's genetic in my family, both my mother and her mother have depression (in my mother's case it got really severe some time in her late 20s) and I talk to them occasionally, but I don't want to worry either of them so I'm not fully up front with it (before somebody tells me to be more honest, I've tried and just can't do it). I'm at the moment the only guy in the family with it so that alienates me a little more. As for friends, I only really have two that I talk to and neither of them are depressed, but they have been good influences on it and I usually feel a lot more confident around them.

I was kind of in the same spot as you when I was 18, though my decision was made for me (medical bullshit).
Essentially the American military right now is kind of stupid unless you have a driving desire to be a part of that tradition. If go enlisted, most of your peers will be absolute retards (if you go a combat-based role) and if you don't go into a combat-based role, you're have that stigma of being a pussy and feeling like you don't do anything cool.
Things get a little better if you're an officer, but it's still kind of fucky and IMO not worth it unless you're guaranteed/dead set on a certain job after joining.
Tl;dr version, if you legitimately can't think of anything better to do right now, it can't hurt. I always recommend that people take time to think if they don't have a plan or goal yet instead of barreling headfirst into college undecided. Worst that can happen for you is you lose 4 years of your life to something that annoys the fuck out of you, but hey, then at least you get to reap the benefit of a GI bill.
