Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studys & getting critique.

>Thread study: This one is rather advanced because its quite likely people here struggle even with a basic head drawing, but its nice to branch out sometimes. Try doing some different expressions, maybe fill a whole page with them -> simplyfication is the key for quick skecthing, capture what makes the expression unique.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>>
Would drawing images from anatomy books then trying again from memory count as a good exercise? Doing that with Bridgman Drawing from Life.
>>
>>2311900
No. Focus on getting proportion right with your drawing first. Don't forget to match the background value as well otherwise your subject's value will be off. For hair, focus on the whole thing by squinting hard. After squinting the value is about as dark as the background and only slightly lighter than her hoodie. The only light part appears at the top, not the individual strands on the side.

Why don't we draw lips?

Does it add too much detail to that specific part of the face in comparison to the rest? Is it because the lips aren't so much a form as a color change?

I have this horrible habit of wanting to add a bottom lip to my drawings and it makes my characters look pouty or just plain retarded. This has been happening less and less as I catch myself, but I think it's just from growing up feeling that when you draw a girl you have to draw the lips.
>>
>>2308206

I think its because it has too much of a contrast when the rest of the face and body isnt shaded and it just ends up looking bad.

Hello /ic/, my name is Boxman and I was born with a box attached my to my head.

I am offering my services as a nude model for /ic/, as my condition leaves me little job oppurtunities elsewhere.

I can take pose requests, so
If this sounds like a good idea, let me know.

Sincerely, Boxman.

definite improvement on the lines but the wheels perspective are off on both.remember the minor axis of the ellipse points towards the vanishing point, along the line of the axle

dates can be as far apart as you like

What do you d/ic/ks think of Ctrl Paints tutorials?

They're a really nice introductory resource to digital art, I find. The videos often lack depth but has really good breadth, and he's generally pretty succinct and says what needs to be said in 5-10 minutes. Generally his advice is pretty reasonable too.
>>
>>2317453
Good. He is the only resource I've found that actually tells you how to use photoshop properly. I bought his first package and in one of the series he goes through how he made a digital painting from start to finish, It is nice to see the process.

It's probably because you're using sketchy lines and messy draftsmanship to hide your poor drawing skills, but I can't know unless I see a comparison.

I'd love to work for Kojima but I'm not even close to good enough. I do have a question though - why do these job discussion threads keep getting deleted? It's one of the few really informative and productive topics that comes up, I never see any arguing, but they keep getting deleted and I don't understand why. I really hope this one lasts.
>>
>>2317365
They get deleted? I used to post jobs and competitions some time ago and they stay up throughout. I guess just try to keep the discussion art related.

Anyway, I'd be happy if any of you d/ic/ks could get a job with Kojima.
>>
>>2317368
I feel like the last two I've seen have been pruned, but maybe they just didn't bump fast enough and I wasn't paying attention.
That would be great though, there are some people here I think are good candidates. I've been trying to bring some of Shinkawa's looseness and use of heavy shadow into my work lately. While I've actually been pleasantly surprised with some of the results, it's still too new for me. Whoever he works with will probably need to be someone who's already pretty refined. Also I can't design worth shit lol. Got any more art? I love looking at this kind of stuff.

Not sure if this warrants its own thread by this board's standards*, but free stuff so imma post it anyway:

I did a siterip of Pose Maniacs, the popular figure drawing tool. Mega link below.

Each of their 1130 poses is just a sequence of 36 JPEGS stuck in a clunky, unresponsive SWF viewer.

Shitty viewer kinda defeats the purpose of the site, IMO.
So I wrote a script to pull out all the stills and reorganize them.

Added a "previews" folder with just the first image of every sequence.
Too many images to fuck with contact sheets so don't even go there.

Total unzipped size is around 1 GB.

So for the Santa program at work, I ended up with the card for a 14 year old guy. He asked for drawing supplies, with no other info supplied.
So far, I've been thinking about:
Moleskin Sketchbook
Strathmore 400 sketch pad
and a pack of Sakura pens.
I'm assuming they're a low income family since they're in the program, so I'm trying to balance between "nice" stuff for him, and buying him more items of a slightly lower quality.
So what would you guys want for Xmas if you were a broke 14 year old dude?

And critique the pic if you want.

That sounds pretty good already to be honest. If you are already getting him some pens maybe try getting a decent brushpen too as it will open up a lot of new possibilities for him and would likely be something he hasn't tried before.

If you want to spend more you can also get him an instructional book too. Maybe one of Loomis' books or something. Or How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way might be better for a 14 year old while still being of actual use (many drawing books aimed at kids are garbage). I'm not sure really how serious a 14 year old would be, but if he is interested in art then exposing him to a resource that could lead him out of amateurism to a professional career one day might not be a bad idea. Or maybe an instructional book is too "boring" for someone of that age, and a book like The Art Spirit, or maybe Art and Fear would be better.
>>
>>2317089
Yeah, that's the thing about the instructional books...I'm not sure if he's copying daVinci sketches or manga...
>>
>>2317073
A decent sketchbook, some pencils, eraser, sharpener, and a link to the wiki.

That was pretty good anon, i really liked the victim part you pretty much nail em, the interrogator could have used more aggression and the other mobster was okay, maybe you could have added him a bit more dummed down tone.

Defenetly would recommend watching one of the ricepirate voice acting tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flr9Lua2ka0

also whenever your talking to the mic try talking THRU it not to it. It will add more of a character that way.

Btw do you have any links to your works or maybe a website. I tried acting myself but im really shit so im thinking finding other people to voice act in my animations. Would you be interested in that?

I always really struggle with rendering, especially smooth skin. I was told not to blend because it ruins the tooth of the paper, however i find it really hard to do continuous shading while minding the surface planes without being able to see lines. Do you have any rendering tips?

well appreciated anyway.

I've only been at it for about a month and a half and am interested in exploring new techniques. So what do you use?

I'm still working with number 2 pencils. They actually feel pretty good to draw with if you sharpen them manually with a safety edge razor or a paper cutter
>>
Pencils suck, the value range is minimal and colour is where it's at.

Watercolour/oils mainly. Minor Ink wash jazz. Oil pastel if I need to be mobile.
>>
nice pens and mechanical pencils only. i can't stand wood pencils
