Why did the term "mean-spirited" become such a bogeyman? It's a legitimate criticism depending on your tastes. If you watch a show because you like the characters, you aren't going to like it when the show constantly shits all over them. There is humor in that - seeing somebody fail or get beat up - but it's not a type of humor that applies to everyone.
