I just started reading Punisher Max and found the first couple of storylines pretty good. Born was a generally good story and provided a good sense of what happened to make Castle capable of doing what he does.
Volume 1 seemed a pretty good way to reintroduce Castle after he became the punisher. We see a bit of what he does, we see that because he's good at what he does people want him to work for them and then we see how he reacts and strategises while the chips are down.
What I really want to talk about though is Kitchen Irish. It's not that I don't think it was a good story necessarily, but it wasn't a Punisher story. The plot seems much more driven by the Brits who are working alongside Castle to take down the Irish, that is when we are focussing on the protagonists. Most of the volume was about the Irish themselves and the dynamics between the rival gangs. While obviously it's important for us to know a bit about the dynamics between the gangs in Hell's Kitchen, it felt like The Punisher himself was an afterthought in this story. He barely shows up and when he does it seems like his British mate is doing as much if not more of the work.
I feel like Kitchen Irish was a way for Ennis to say what he wanted to say about "the troubles" rather than him trying to tell a punisher story. You can even see it fairly blatantly towards the end in the MI6 agent's speech to the captured IRA member that he's using the Englishman as a soapbox podium to say what he thinks about both sides of the war.
Like I say, it's not a bad story, but I buy Punisher for Punisher. I buy comics to see the titular character(s), not for the writer to go off on one about their homeland. It just Narks me off a bit.
Tell me, is there more of this crap in later volumes or should I keep reading?

Well yeah actually, but Born and Volume 1 didn't suffer from the same problem so it struck me as odd in volume 2 where we shifted completely away from Punisher for most of the book.

Punisher is kind of a force of nature that kills the criminals whose actions provide the premise for the story.
It makes sense to focus heavily on the villains since you KNOW they're going to die so you might as well tell their story while you still can.
And even Born was told from a second party's perspective, so you kinda disproved your own point there.
That said, Kitchen Irish probably is the weakest MAX arc.

I for one love the duo and their original and stylish feel on the old Justice League and with their movie "announced" I could not be happier. What are your guys thoughts? Personally I think the entire extended Justice League should be included in the DCU, and this is the perfect way to do it. Zatana, Mr. Miracle, Red Tornado, Firestorm, Dr. Fate anybody? That's where DC could have the real huge jump on Marvel, WB has access to ALL of the DC characters (to my knowledge) so they could technically have a Justice League movie with dozens of members. Just like the JLU cartoon, the pinnacle of superhero production. It's not like Captain Boomerang and Slipknot weren't enough of a stretch already. I say bring on the 2nd (or 3rd) tiers DC! Even if it may take more than 10 years of (successful) movie making to get there.

Are they just beings with super powers from another planet or dimension that settled on earth?
How exactly does the afterlife work? Do you only end up in the afterlife that you believe in? Greek gods seem to be a thing in both Marvel and DC, with Tartarus/Hades being a thing for dead people. I remember reading a story where Hercules and Frank Cho end up in the greek afterlife after dying, but then fought their way out? Or something?
And seems like in DC they have both Odin AND Zeus hanging around doing stuff. Do they fight over whos the better god?
Hell with Aquaman/Namor around in DC/Marvel, what does Poseidondo all day? Does he interact with the ocean races?
What about gods of other religions? Does christian God fuck around with Zeus sometimes?

Some are, sure, while others come about from human dreams and ideas (read Sandman), like Odin, Loki, the Greek pantheon etc, they lose power when people stop worshipping them, but still have varying degrees of personal power.
Others are just very powerful beings that take the name of gods, technically Superman could be this, if he wanted, I mean, who would call him out on it? Exactly the same circumstances of others who do it.
Others are empowered by the literal energy of God with a capital G himself, and have essentially spent their entire evolution under the influence of god energy. I am talking about, of course, Darkseid and the other New Gods.
There are also multiversal gods, which I see in three categories. The New Gods are one, Brainiac is another, and the hyperstory Monitors are the third.
All three groups have a 'true' being or form, which dictates the 'versions' or 'pieces' of each that enter individual universes. With the Monitors being slightly different in that their 'OG form' is kinda separate from the smaller parts now.

Those that go to Lucifers Hell are free to leave at any time, with a couple exceptions, it's just that they believe that they belong there and give power over themselves to Lucifer/Demons. The Lucifer series touched on this a bit. Heaven also exists for the opposite, even if you don't worship Him or even know about it. Martian Manhunter went there when he died, because he deserved a good rest.
Those that die serving the Asgard gods in battle would end up in Vallhalla, the Amazons usually go to places like Hades,

All the afterlife areas function differently, some being permanent rest, while others are more akin to just a different dimension.

In DC he generally hangs around Olympus, watching over the Amazons and Paradise Island. Very rarely will he interact with someone like Aquaman and the like, but yeah he does keep a watchful eye over the oceans and its people, especially Atlantis.

The Christian God, known as Yahweh by name in DC very, very rarely interferes at all, even with other gods.
He created everything, including the other gods. I would honestly be surprised if Zeus et al actually even know He exists.
What the Gods like Zeus, Darkseid etc are to an amoeba, Yahweh is to those Gods. Even Lucifer and Michael are above them by leagues and leagues.
One thing to remember though, in a Gods 'home'/dimension/place of power, they almost always have dominance over those who visit. Take Lucifer visiting the Japanese gods, in his own series. While he could easily smite them to dust and back, while inside their realm, he would have been powerless, and instead had to resort to trickery and mind prowess to best them. cont
