Some on /out/ claim that there are more trees on earth today than there has ever been in history. Others strongly disagree. No one is citing sources, just a lot of name calling and sarcastic green texts. I want answers, not banter. This is important to me.
The destruction of the forests throughout most of europe, much of central north america, and all throughout the amazon suggest otherwise.
Deforestation is a huge problem recognized by a lot of environmentalists. This is absolutely not the time period with the most trees.

There is no way that's true. Considering how much space is being used for human sprawl and the fact that humans inhabit basically all the forested regions, this is simply a physically impossible claim. And there are more people in the rainforests now than there ever have been in recorded history, so at the very least for rainforests you can be 100% sure this claim is false.

>Some on /out/ claim that there are more trees on earth today than there has ever been in history.
I don't see how that could be possible. Our current population is ridiculously higher than it has been in any point in history. Add to that industrialization. We have to cut away forests to make room for power plants, refineries, housing units, etc. There's a lot of industrialization that goes into keeping a city running. And it's not as if populations in developed countries...

Have you ever saved an animal from a miserable life or certain death?
Tell me heartwarming stories.

I was out running one day, and I found a kitten under a bridge. He was a little dirty and had what looked like a slightly prolapsed anus. I ended up giving him to a friend whose ex-roommate was looking for a kitten. He is now living comfily with a Great Pyrenees.

Not a life-or death story, but I guess it's close enough in my case. I live in a neighborhood full of minorities that don't know how to care for dogs, so I might have to call animal control on a couple of puppies on the balcony of a seemingly abandoned apartment.

I've told Bumby's story a few times here
His shelter name was Patches. He was surrendered as an older kitten, 6 months old maybe. The shelter separated cats that have had URIs from cats that haven't, and he was the only cat that had had a URI so he was all alone in a kitty cottage in the back of the shelter.
I was a volunteer. Most of the volunteers didn't like him because he wasn't interested in being pet, he only wanted to play rough. Most of the cat volunteers are old retirees, who like the senior cats. So, he basically didn't get any attention.
he was there for a month, and then he was adopted by an old lady. He's very pretty and soft, so I can see why an old lady would want him even after being warned that he isn't a good personality fit. He attacked her while she was watching wheel of fortune and sent her to the hospital. She returned him to the shelter.
He was there for another few months while they tried to find a home for him. His kennel now had a warning posted on it that he had a history of attacking owners. I got very attached to him, but couldn't adopt him because I have too many cats. One day while volunteering I told him "I think you're my cat, but we just haven't figured it out yet"
He got adopted by a family with 2 kids around 8-10. After a week, he was returned for attacking the father and putting him in the hospital. After he was returned this time, they put him on the "needs rescue" list, which means he's unadoptable and will be put down unless a rescue takes him. I was on this e-mail list, and contacted a rescue to pull him for me.
His death row cage was so small, he could barely turn around. When he saw me he put his paw out of the cage and cried until we put him in the box.
3 years later, he is my perfect little prince. He attacked me once in the first week we had him, but we were able to work with him. Now he's spoiled rotten and I couldn't imagine my life without him.
>Cesar Millan Officials Investigating Possible Animal Cruelty
https://archive.is/wDj11
L.A. County Animal Control tells us their major case unit, along with the sheriff, are currently at Millan's dog training center in Santa Clarita, CA after numerous complaints flooded in when Millan's show, "Cesar 911," showcased a dog attacking and injuring a pig during a training session.
meh
https://youtu.be/B0Soxw58eiQ
Kind of sensationalized movie, but doesn't take away from the fact that you can clearly see Cesar has no clue what he's doing
https://youtu.be/B0Soxw58eiQ
clearly not being dominant enough.
I will admit that I have not seen one episode of his show all the way through.
I have seen clips where he gets bit. Clips where the dog shows every single sign in the ladder of aggression. How he can call himself a dog whisperer when he doesn't even understand the most basics of dog body language, I don't know.

Has anyone here been involved in animal conservation before? I'm interested in supporting endangered species and the sort but don't really know anything about the organisations that do it/ which ones are trusted etc.
Any thoughts?

The American Prairie Reserve is also really great for North American megafauna. They don't have the same retarded restrictions Yellowstone does and are trying to breed pure Bison bison to around 10,000 individuals, whereas Yellowstone is trying to cull them below 3,000 to please cattle ranchers. It's also located in a region where most species of North American megafauna are native, like Bighorn Sheep and Pronghorn. Name a place, habitat or species you're interested in and I can probably point you to a good charity.

These guys are doing great work for animals in Africa, particularly elephants.
This is their newest video to raise awareness, worth a watch: https://youtu.be/qNExCirJ98k
You know how we got wolves/wildcats, bred them to be smaller, friendlier and less aggressive? Why not do that with bears? Bears are already cute and if we come make them smaller, friendly and shit I bet a lot of people would pay for them.
We have this thread like every other month or so
Hey /an/ my dad bought a dog about 8 months ago. He takes it everywhere he goes but doesn't know how to train it.
Whenever I see her she would listen to my commands. Today my dad asked me to watch over her for about 2 hours so I took her on a really long hike then stopped by a friend's house to get her some water. The whole trip I had treats for her for whenever she listened to one of my commands.
When I started walking back home I was just down the street from my house and the dog decided to just try and run towards the house. I held the leash pretty...

Because puppyness. Same reason why cots will randomly sperg out and run fron room to room.
Oh so it just probably got a little over excited it was going home and just wanted to play a bit more?
What kind of spider is this?
>>2079677
Probably some kind of house spider. Should be harmless.
kill it
>>2079677
Please don't let me misidentify two common spiders in a row.
It's probably a wood spider or a wolf spider... right guys?

Depends on you.
It's gonna be a one-sided relationship where you put forth all the effort to interact with that animal if you want it to react to you in any positive way.
They're pretty cool, but take a lot of care compared to snakes.
Is it okay to walk your cat on a leash?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNYm7dbhQDM
why didn't this person just buy a dog?
o. right, attention
Probably alright if you train it from a kitten. But I'd think only for small walks, not dragging it way out into wilderness while you fucking ski.
I'm going to build a new rabbit pen soon and I wanted to use grass mats as flooring. Because I don't want them to dig out or destroy the grass, I was thinking about putting a wire mesh on top of the grass mats. I will ofcourse leave them a place to dig holes without being able to escape.
What thickness should the wire of the mesh be and what size the holes considering my goal is to prevent damage to both the grass and their paws? Has anybody here tried this already?
I'm not sure if pen means what I was trying to say. I am ofcourse talking about a rabbit run!
Don't use wire mesh as flooring. It's bad for any animal. Even if you go with a thickness that you think would be 'safe', it's better to just not do it.
If you don't want them to destroy the grass, either move the pen around more often or have them on some type of matting akin to the picture you posted instead.
>>2079446
The thing is that the plan is to have a fixed pen. Don't rabbit breeders use cages with purely wire mesh flooring? Ofcourse here the rabbit wouldn't only rest on the wire mesh but also on the grass and soil that is right below it.
Some questions for /an/ as well.
I'll be getting a 8 1/2 week-old German shepherd puppy on St. Paddy's Day. It's a girl, and she'll be trained as a seizure reaction service dog (I have grand mal seizures every few months and can't tell when they're coming on).
Service-dog training advice? Been reading up on all the books I can, plus the rather limited literature re: epilepsy-related service training. I'm basically following every method of feeding, exercise, etc. that the breeder prefers since it's MY first dog. (inb4 shelterfags,...

Shadow dog trainers that specifically train seizure dogs. Shadow them from the moment they get the dog to the day the dog goes home. It takes a year or longer, and you may have to shadow again after that or multiple people during that time to get it down. Some service dog training and work is done with volunteers, so you could definitely hitch in on that once you've gotten the ropes down. Look for ones in your area and see if the need help. Medical trained service dogs requires a lot of situational settings and...

Yikes, walk away from this situation right now and go through a reputable service animal organization. Service dogs need to be bred for a very specific temperament, and have very dedicated socialization and training before they even leave their mother. Sounds like you are being scammed!
>>2079481
not a scam, bro. she breeds only imported German Shepherds (from Germany) that conform to the country's strict as fuck codes for breed standards, pretty much the healthiest dogs on the planet
http://www.vondenbrookfields.com/Sires.html
>>2079479
Thanks for that. I know the service part of her training is going be extremely intense since she'll do the more extensive basic service stuff plus learning what to when I have a seizure.
Hey, so my cat's ankle have started clicking when he walks. It isn't super loud, and my ankles do it too, but I feel like he might be discouraged by the sound. Apparently giving cats a mixture of turmeric, pepper and coconut oil daily can help this. Has anyone here ever tried this?
Go the the vet. See if they will do a phone consultation first, and just say the issue.
Don't give the cat any mixtures like that until you are sure it is safe!
I have never heard of people giving their cats that.
Golden paste is an anti inflammatory, so once you know the clicking is caused by inflammation it's okay to give. But get him checked by a vet to know the cause for certain.
