Considering Dennis was an LDS student for a while, I don't think Reiji considered the possibility that someone from Academia would enrol at LDS. If Sora tried that and did a Fusion summon, Reiji would have found him instantly.
So Reiji not only didn't think someone from Academia would join LDS, but also didn't predict that someone from Academia would use Xyzs. Reiji isn't an idiot for not finding Dennis, however he WAS an idiot for seeing Sora's Fusion readings in episode 18, then doing nothing about it until Reiji basically said to Shun in an episode 27 flashback "by the way, someone in the tournament uses real Fusions". Why not just tell Shun outright they are from Academia? If he knew Sora was from Acadmia, why not just go after Sora himself and get rid of him since he is from Academia? Its not like anyone from YSDS would be able to actually beat him in an non-Action Duel, even moreso if it was before Yuya got his Fusions and Gongenzaka got Synchros.
Could you imagine if Reiji didn't rig the matchups, and it randomly paired Shun up with Kachidoki? Shun would just assume Isao was the "true Fusion user" because Isao uses Fusions and treats everything like combat? So I guess Reiji didn't fuck up as bad as he could have.

If anything, I think Sora will capture Yuzu because Yuri basically put him on the spot to do it. Since its either capture Yuzu or get carded, and the writers WANT Yuya and Yuzu separated. At this rate, Serena has been the main female supporting Yuya for longer (episodes 48 onwards) than Yuzu (episode 1-47).

I think Sora doesn't need one since he focuses on spamming multiple Fusions onto the field (e.g. Yuya vs Sora rematch) whereas Shun just sits on one Xyz with the exception of his rematch with Sora (triple Force Strix all at once).
Though I think if anything, Sora's ultimate boss will have more than 3000 ATK (perhaps 4000 ATK like Cyber End) since he seems to be more power-focused than Shun. All of Sora's Fusions have battle-related effects (Bear gains ATK, Tiger nukes cards and gains ATK, Leo is Fusion Volcasaurus, Sheep is Fusion Armades, Chimera is Fusion Armades and Fusion Goyo combined, Sabre Tiger is basically Tiger on crack with a Beelze effect, and Wolf is Quasar with half its original ATK and no negation).
All Sora actually needs is to use Frightfur Wolf, as well as get some better main deck support that allows him to recycle banished monsters (an effect similar to Dimension Fusion or Parallel World Fusion). The anime effect of Chimera (which is infinitely better than its TCG/OCG effect) is surprisingly powerful despite how shit Chimera itself has been portrayed.

I feel like Sora's skill is downplayed a lot. He isn't as weak as you make out since he is still stronger than any Lancer not named Reiji or Yuya and Shun.
As for the Synchro Dimension:

Jack is the only one from Synchro Dimension who has proven he could beat Sora. It would just be those two trying to OTK the other and failing until Jack summons Scar-Right (if not a stronger monster) and wins.
Besides, Dennis is still inferior to Sora since Dennis would have got BTFO harder in episodes 58-59 than Sora did in episods 33-34. Even in the rematches, Sora won his duel while Dennis would have got OTK'd by Shun if Action Cards weren't used and Shun didn't need them for Dennis.

As for Shun, while each have a win on each other, it's more of a 50-50 chance that either side could win. The remaining Lancers (Serena, Sawatari, Gongenzaka, Reira) aren't able to beat Sora yet.
Based on what they have shown, Shun has obtained two (now three) new Xyzs whereas Sora's deck hasn't evolved just yet. I imagine that we will see Sora will a new Frightfur or two when the invasion happens.
