Sawatari, even though he is a complete and utter idiot, can duel very well.
Against Yuya, both times, he was able to bring him to brink of losing. With Yuto he wouldve won thanks to a great backrow play, but lost due to a bullshit "-100 lifepoints" graveyard play. We all know what happened with Yugo, and how he should've won.
Sawatari has been shown to be able to work with any deck he plays with, and has used 4 so far. He is able to entertain while still winning, which makes him a great entame duelist as well.
He's destined to lose against Yuri, but he would be able to fight him to the last life point, maybe even expose his deck's weakness.

Yep! That's my feeling on it anyway on how it will go down between Yuri and Sawatari. That's why I said that out of the Lancers remaining after the Synchro Dimension Arc if they are still a group by then that he will be the closest one out of them all with the exception of Yuya who we know will most likely be the one that ends Yuri's uncontested win streak.
Though my feelings on what will happen after the Synchro Dimension Arc is that the Lancers break up as a group. Shun decides that being a Lancer isn't worth it and leaves back to the XYZ Dimension to prepare himself and the remnants of the Resistance to make a final stand against Academia to rescue Ruri and defeat L/Reo once and for all and Yuya having enough of Reiji's antics and wanting to be helpful will go with Shun(out of obligation for Yuto and EGAO) alongside Yuzu who wants to grow stronger still. Most likely that Serena gets captured or the unlikely event of her getting nommed by Yuzu and Tsukikage probably gets Carded and Gongenzaka is a what if. If THE MAN makes it past the Synchro Dimension Arc he will most probably go with Yuya and Yuzu out of the bonds of friendship he shares with them.

We are talking about the same Yuto who got BTFO by Yugo, even when Yugo was holding back. In the Yuto vs Yugo duel, Yugo had Three-Eyed Dice in his grave which is basically Necro Garna. Yuto was fucked from the beginning and got outclassed by Yugo.
Sawatari struggling more against Yuto doesn't make Yuto better than Yugo. It means Sawatari was a weaker duelist against Yuto back then but now he has become a better duelist, hence his performance against Yugo. Obviously if Sawatari dueled Yuto now then Sawatari wouldn't lose easily, and might actually beat Yuto considering all Yuto had was Break Sword and Dark Rebellion.

But you really could say that about any duelist. Why is Yugo called out for this when the same can be said of any duelist:
