This. People don't seem to realize that his fight against Cell was really only a one-time thing.
This is what happens when you're raised by your mother. Gohan was at his best when he was with goku and piccolo. He trained and fought and didn't hate it, he often wanted to stop studying to do it. He just didn't go looking for fights. He used his talent, fighting was his vocation. It's true he fought for peace but he only stopped training because it was actively encouraged not to. that's why he became what he is.

Not really. Gohan never enjoyed fighting, he only did it because he didn't want to see his friends get hurt. He always wanted to be a scholar. Literally, I think on the fourth page we see Gohan/the first episode of Z, Gohan says he wants to be a "great scholar" at the age of 4.
