Reason: it gets better and better because over 50 Episodes Code Geass had the Drama, the Directing, the effort, the setup, the bildup and most importently the payoff of movies (no animeseries did this)
The Conflict at first is classic but from Episode to Episode it gets deeper in political attitudes of both sides which (in R2 a bit better) are getting good characterisation. The Conflict between the characters is very well written, good explained and never came to stagnation because throught awesome plottwist the show every keep you gassing. Every Character in CG is conflicted, The characters changes her political thoughts and own expectatons a lot when series goes on, Lelouch as genuis as he is loses fights, he has to go through so much to come to his target to the point were everybody is against him. He always is a conflicted person with all the things he does. And the final conclution has the greatest Pay-off not only to most setups and bildups but to the whole show. No Anime has ever made anything like this.
You have to be investet in script writing to fully understand how masterfull it is to write a show like code geass from beginning to end how these writers made it. A Show with do much Contend these guys (longtime running shounen with 300+ Episodes can't pull of) are putting in 50 Episodes and it worked perfectly (they made the right choices in the Script when things should get cut shorter or things they need longer to be there

Certain parts of the show are awesome and well-written or well-explained, but others obviously aren't. Good character writing isn't exclusively defined by character conflicts, but an interesting one does help.
Code Geass Geass is a rollercoaster that can be watched and enjoyed in multiple ways, from the most legitimate to the most vicarious, depending on the audience. It's not the greatest of all times, of course, but neither is it the opposite.
"Trainwreck" is a term that has been abused so much that it means nothing.

Many of the pretentious deep quotes hit their marks, but some of them didn't.
The penguins where pretty funny, but they got in the way too often. Which makes me thing that, they wanted me to not take anything "deep" going on seriously.
