This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/b5cN2RkK
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)

Are there too many magical girl quests?

If so, what should replace them?

If not, how can I put an original spin on them?
>>
>>44829445
>Are there too many magical girl quests?

No, in fact; Magical Girl quests have stopped being prime quest material over a year ago. Most of them have died out, and are vastly outnumbered by the standard fare of quests.

Sci-fi seems to be the new big thing. No surprise, on the heels of Star Wars and all.

>If so, what should replace them?
There isn't really 'replacing' them. They're just a type of superhero. If you don't want to write Magical Girl, then don't write it.

yeah, that was poorly worded.

Seems like plenty of people get the part right when it comes to having direct superiors and top brass somewhere up the line. They tell you what to do and give direct orders.

The problem comes when you are given vague instructions and independence is given. In theory, they trust you to know how to react and what helps further the organization's goals, but we don't know the organization as well as the character.

So how does the QM bridge that gap? Do they even bother? Some kind of SOP manual or even just military code like you get in any ROTC would be plenty help: that's why they exist.

I hope I haven't done anything to spread that misunderstanding, but I should probably speak up anyway. I wouldn't like if someone were to give my quest a look because they were told it is something it isn't.

Lessons in Knighthood is one of my main inspirations for the quest, but the word 'substitute' would be false advertising. >Joker for Dumbest Player Base and Best Depiction of Pure Suffering.

The best part of Joker Quest, to me, is the insanely mean-spirited subplot about Mio (and Cybele). Like, you have a girl who is waiting for her knight in shining armor to sweep her off her feet, and she falls for Joker hard. REALLY hard.

At the very end, she finds out that he's been using her for half-assed emotional compensation. To add insult to injury, he didn't even fuck her, but slept with another girl instead for even less reason.

The best part is when she learns that no-one loves her for who she is, they simply want to use her for one destructive purpose or another. Even her own mother wanted to possess her so she could get another chance at her selfish and ultimately self-destructive life.

It's the little touches that distinguish it, like the girls who were bullying her all the time turning out to actually be brave and relatively innocent in their own right. The unspoken solution was that if they'd actually bullied her to death, the current apocalypse would be averted.
>>

>>
>>44834518
>It's the little touches that distinguish it, like the girls who were bullying her all the time turning out to actually be brave and relatively innocent in their own right.
They were bullying her because she was passively sucking out their souls just by coming close to them, which prompted instinctual enmity. Joker himself experienced it and barely held himself back from telling her to fuck off.
>The unspoken solution was that if they'd actually bullied her to death, the current apocalypse would be averted.
Not really. She was part of the plan, but she wasn't actually vital to it and her part in it could've been omitted with relative ease.
>>
>>44834518
> It's the little touches that distinguish it, like the girls who were bullying her all the time turning out to actually be brave and relatively innocent in their own right.

They mostly died horribly offscreen.
>>
>>44834580

Yeah, it was a bit of hyperbole on my part. It doesn't change the fact that it must have really, really sucked to be Mio. Especially since she's the only girl who made all the (really emotional and a little uncomfortable) passionate confessions and bedroom eyes at Joker.
>>
>>44830966
>>44831096
I think the point is that most Banished Quest players tend to get a bit butthurt when people say the QMC is an elf.
>>
>>44829445

Look, I think this is worth saying: I don't think a 'traditional' magical girl quest that hews closely to Sailor Moon or Precure is going to work too well. Those shows tend to be very episodic, and also very, very feminine.

And while /tg/ likely gets an illicit thrill (Like a sex-criminal) from pretending to be a little girl, having to ACT like a girl is no fun. Anyone remembers Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne? It's fairly typical as a magical girl series, but it has extremely rapey love interests, the heroine is actually raped at one point by the villain to deprive her of her powers (it doesn't stick) and it's ultimately a heterosexual romance that uses Adam and Eve symbolism. It also outright states (By GOD, no less) "I made men to be stronger than women, because women need to be protected."

It's like making a shoujo VN into a game. You know, the kind where the heroine has to regularly be saved by shirtless and vaguely sexually threatening bishonen. /tg/ simply cannot play a Quest like that without ripping up the railroads and going berserk.

If there isn't a subversive, dark spin on it, you get an extremely milquetoast series that makes no-one happy. Since we're mostly heterosexual men here, with a few bisexuals out of sheer desperation, we want to fuck attractive women. Playing a magical girl and being cute is about wanting to manipulate a girl by proxy. Might as well be honest about it and make them love interests.
>>
>>44835217

So how would you run a magical girl quest?

>>44835285

As I've said, as love interests. A quest where you're inherently passive won't work, of course, and no-one wants to be a male Lois Lane (which is deeply emasculating).

That leaves Quests where you're some kind of superhero yourself. Alternatively, you could constantly tease yuri the way a lot of shows recently do, but really, an inherently feminine archetype doesn't lend itself to gameplay. /tg/ always plays with the male mindset, regardless.
>>
>>44835217
>It's like making a shoujo VN into a game.
I want one of those as a quest too. I want all the super rapey male interests and I want them to put me in a cage for my own good.

Okay guys, how about a quest where you play as a magical girl...

Who used to be a man?? I'd call it "Breaker Quest" desu
>>
>>44835357

You could always run a Tuxedo Kamen Quest. Personally, I always thought he kept getting brainwashed so he could try out both sides. Queen Beryl was so clearly fucking him it wasn't even subtext.
>>
>>44835293
The yuricucks and other flaming faggots are a minority, senpai
>>
>>44835378

I always felt that yuri fans are vaguely dishonest, since it's really about watching two girls have sex. You might as well have them in a love triangle with the MC for all it matters. It's fundamentally a male fetish.
>>
>>44835413
>wanting love triangles
get out of here you fucking cuck
>>
>>44835413
Love triangles are the cancer of the romance genre.
>>
>>44835413
>have sex

Nah man, that's doing yuri wrong.
>>
>>44835462

Really? I think it's a great way to get people interested. If you're smug and secure that the girl loves no-one else but you, you're not really invested in the romance, are you? But if someone else wants to fuck her and she might reciprocate, then suddenly there's a challenge. (Note that I'm talking about a MMF love triangle).

For a 'two girls, one guy' love triangle? Even more exciting. In Quests, what happens is forever. Who does the player pick? Shit, it's a big commitment to make. You can't go back and pick the other path.

>>44835470

When there's no sexuality in romance, it's too safe. Lesbian sex is non-penetrative, and thus doesn't have the same visceral, permanent feel of a girl getting fucked by a guy. It has to be absolutely clear she's given her 'purity' to a male character, she's now a woman, and that arc is concluded. No pussy-footing around, it's happened.
>>
>>44832606
Will there ever be a quest as bad and a trainwreck as new mmo which survived for 10+ threads?
>>
>>44835492

What happened in that one
>>
>>44835482
Fuck that fast route lock is always the best way.
Anything else is asking for waifu wars and shitposting to take over the quest.
>>
This sounds like JQOP's particular brand of bullshit.
>>
>>44835514
>even letting them choose
Just lead them on for a few threads and force your favourite girl on them, saves you the waifu wars and still lets them think they had a choice.
>>
>>44835502
Do you know the new quest master failure bingo?
Imagine a quest that had every single possible fault yet still survived and didn't die after the first few threads.
Rather than a quest remembered for how amazing or emotional or anything, its remembered as a complete and utter piece of shit thats a lesson in stuff you shouldn't do.
>>
>>44835522

>>
>>44835518

>>
>>44835550
He didn't die, he's just resting.
>>
>>44835514
You know its funny. As I read more quests I've come to realize. Waifufagging doesn't hurt the quest all that much, specially if its in character. But man Anti-waifufagging sperg is x2 worse. They'll shitpost, samefag, and forsake any narrative development cause they don't like thing. That hurts a quest way more than talking about getting a romantic interest.
>>
>routelock
>starting married
Worse than hitler
>>
>>44835217
The girls in Precure generally aren't that passive. That said though

>Anyone remembers Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne? It's fairly typical as a magical girl series, but it has extremely rapey love interests, the heroine is actually raped at one point by the villain to deprive her of her powers

Fuck I forgot about that, that shit was hilarious. There's actually an akun quest running now using the same logic, I knew it fucking reminded me of something. I'm counting down the sessions before the players go insane with guilt and start protecting smiles.
>>
>>44835582
Which is why route locking super fact with a defined MC works well.
Anti-waifus will either shut up or fuck off and waifu-fags have their waifu to enjoy every once in a while as the story moves on.

I'm going to pitch my quest to you guys, tell me what you think.

A mix of a dystropia a la "A Brave New World"/"1984", and modern fantasy. Magic is used as a method of oppression from the government, with divinations. Routine "Detect Thoughts" spells bare used to keep the population in check by the police, which are all magical constructs with spell-casting items. Trying to learn magic would also be punished by death, and any religious need is catered by adoration to the Leader.

Basically, Kim Jong-un's wet dream, but with magic.

The story would start out with the QMC discovering that he has been secretly randomly selected for death within a few weeks by the government, due to population-trimming reasons.
>>
>>44835582
No, you see. If quests I liked weren't tainted by waifus in the first place I wouldn't need to bitch about waifufags. Quests shouldn't be bogged down by TEE HEE relationship bullshit.
>>
>>44835514
I honestly see most players routelock themselves.

First relatively popular girl wins, especially if she's had time to develop before any other candidates are introduced.
>>
>>44835582
This is just confirmation bias. It's true dependent upon if the QM doesn't write romance well and actively avoids writing romantic scenes.

If the Quest itself is focused moreso on romantic things occurring, players will then fixate more on who the MC ends up with, if anyone.

You specifically refer to scenarios where waifus are just ancillary information, a sideshow to the main event. Yes, sperg lording happens in both scenarios, but the metric of badness doesn't line up here.
>>
>>44835413
>It's fundamentally a male fetish.
Just as the contrary is a female one. Good lord, you're being spectacularly clever today!
>>
>>44835617
Yeah but it's important to grab that player routelock early to make it official before a fight starts.
It's the easiest way to do it.

>>
>>44835601

I don't agree at all. In fact, I think the idea of routelock isn't really applicable to Quests and shuts off a lot of interesting developments.

Look, as a QM, the main incentive for me to keep writing is to see what you, the players, make of the story. That means that stuff has to happen. What people think routelock means is that they've committed to one girl, and now everything is okay forever on the romance front. Me, I say that's when the games REALLY begin.

VNs have routelock because they can't account for infinite possibilities. But a Quest is basically a campaign run by a DM, and a lot can happen. Shit, White Album 2 is all about how routelock doesn't work. The protagonist hooks up with the girl who's perfect for him, then realizes that the girl who's TERRIBLE for him is his true love. Then all hell breaks loose.

Off the top of my head, I can think a lot of a lot of interesting things happening after the hero picks a girl. Maybe she's been acting nice all this time, and now her true personality is coming out. Maybe the crazy girl actually stabilizes now that she has a sense of security. Or maybe the girl gets cold feet and starts fretting. You know the whole idea of leaving someone at the altar? Hell, there's a lot of new tension from just becoming a steady couple, lots of new ground to cover. Then there's a lot of awful stuff about infidelity and sexual tension, but let's not go into that just yet.

More, if the QM is going to force the players to pick, what's the point? Might as well just write a story. I argue that it's the crazy decisions and odd tangents /tg/ makes as an entity, with people constantly wresting away control in one direction or another, that makes it fun for the writer. God knows I'd have given up long ago otherwise.

You know what's really boring to a QM? When the players are playing it safe and bean-counting, or holed up in their Fortress of Solitude. That ain't gameplay, that's the part I dread when running D&D.
>>
>>44835682

Not the same poster, actually. But for a guy, girl-on-girl is fucking hot especially if you get can get involved later.
>>
>>44835742
Cool enjoy having shitposting and flamewars over waifus overtake your quest.
I hope you didn't want any other story to happen in it.
>>
>>44835763
You know how ridiculous that statement would have been if you had ever run a quest.
>>
>>44835742
Look that trussed up line of thought sounds nice, good for you, but for the autistic shitlords or the people feigning being autistic shitlords participating in your quest aren't going to behave in line with your ideal of good conduct. They're going to shitpost. They're going to add nothing of value to the conversation, samefag repeatedly and consistently troll-vote out of petty spite when things don't go their way.

Waifus shouldn't even vaguely be the focus of a Quest. It'd be nice if relationship focused endeavors like that could work, but they can't, so why bother?
>>
>>44835763
Which quests got ruined due to waifus for you anon.

You seem really cynical and jaded.
>>
>>44835763

The story is what you make of it, and so are the waifus. When players are arguing, they've invested and trying to make things happen. I would argue that the only time things would grow cancerous if it's a big harem where everyone is happily receiving the D.

I mean, have you ever seen two women compete for the same guy? It's vicious.

It can be done. Really.

What really got me was how the premise was based on Moonlight Sculptor, ie. MC is a horrible shitstain whose only redeeming trait is literally insane levels of spiteful hard work.

So in a quest about deliberately powergaming an MMO to be the best most awesomest dude.....we have a character with stat allocations every which way, horribly overleveled with neither job, gear, or any kind of game plan to kill any sort of mob, and have extremely conflicting NPC allies who are liable to kill each other and thus waste the time we spent getting them to like us, while utterly wasting the few mary sue unique powers we got granted.

If maxmin was the opposite of minmax, that was the character. You literally could not do worse deliberately trying to make a bad build, because we accidentally found hidden/locked skills to make it so.

Harems are fantasies that generally people who have never had sex have. They don't like actual character development, or individual things about characters, they just want to have a whole gaggle of bitches at their beck and call, regardless of how those bitches actually interacted with eachother. They want to be the perfect center of that group in the way they cannot possibly be in real life.

Most "harems" in real life are usually done in places where the women are more or less forced into it under the threat of violence. Basically by alpha males with money or power, things the average quest reader doesn't have.

Harems are shit, and are desired by shitty readers.

That part also bothered me. The whole reason there's so much fucking drama in the story and why the MC turns into such a shitter is because Setsuna's the one who tried to break up him and Kazusa despite being fully aware that the two were already in love with each other. The reason route-lock didn't work was not because of the MC's choices, but because he was manipulated into losing his agency until he became aware there was a choice in the first place.
