This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/b5cN2RkK
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)
[Hugbox] #ques/tg/enerals @ Rizon.net (barely related to quests; enjoys Larro quests and anime)

>Why aren't you running yet?

I've wanted to run a quest for a long time, but I don't have many 6-8 hour blocks of time to work with. I like the freedom of posting little bits here and there.

If you can put up with Anonkun (a stretch, I know), and you like science fiction involving space, xenos, and time travel, then drop on by. I'll be running in a couple hours.

If you're doing a prologue establishing the MCs character and backstory through a number of incidents and timeskips, what's the best way to go about it?

I was considering doing two separate threads, both focusing on a single period of time (a single day) where everything in their life changed. There'd be about 7 or 8 years between them, then the third thread would be the main storyline starting up.

Do you think players would have the patience to play through 2 threads to get to the promised premise of the quest? For the purposes of my question assume the actual writing is moderately engaging, but not enormously gripping.

Would players be more invested in a character they've developed from experiences than one that came about through character generation?
>>
>>44798171
It had only two threads. Wanted to improve the setting but lost my trip. It was a highjacked quest with one or more anons following. Sorry anon can't continue the adventures of Mila and Fang.
>>
>>44798746
Make it like Amnesia the Dark Descent. MC tem Amnesia and by things he finds start to trigger a memorie making the anons play the MC in that timeskip.
>>
PBQ
>>
>>44798783
But going backwards reverses the narrative flow, when you really want to be moving forwards and building anticipation and tension for the future. Flashbacks are good for solving mysteries, but I wouldn't rate them as a means of improving reader investment.
>>
>Why aren't you running yet? Why do you keep putting it off?
I've been running frequently and I can't stand it. My quality is dipping. I'm taking a break because everything is on the spot improv and complete asspulls. People still think they're fun, and they talk about them, but I feel blown the fuck out and in need of a break.
>>
>>44798906
I know the feeling! A break really might be in order, but not for too long, only until you get an uplifting idea to work with, or else you'll get too used to it and won't want to run again.
>>
>>44798473
See >>44798660 for part of it.

Checking for input on a possible quest.

Two brothers to an Apostate, a mage considered both a danger and a criminal to the crown, lives a secluded life in a cottage out in the woods with their Father. However, one day they return home to find their Father dead from a spell gone wrong. Heartbroken, the two boys use whatever magic they've learned through their father's teachings and his books to try and resurrect him. However, the spell goes awry and instead the Father's corpse comes back alive as a twisted creature that begs for them to kill it before it takes flight. The backlash of the failed spell costs one of the brothers life, but the other brother casts a soulbound spell with what little energy and mana he has left. When he wakes up a couple of hours later, he discovers that his brothers soul has attached itself to his own and he can hear his late brother's voice in his head.

So starts a quest for the MC to find a way to break the forbidden soulbound spell he cast so his brother can come back to life and hunt down the creature they set loose in the world to free their father's spirit from torment.

What would be more interesting to play as?

>A sentient creature that feeds on humans and can take on the form of a human. Will need to hide in plain sight among humans. Will also often have to fight both other creatures for territories and human hunters to stay alive.
or
>A human who's part of an organization of hunters that hunt down these creatures. You will be assigned a single creature to hunt, investigate their hunting grounds, figure out their "human" identity and then figure out a time and place to kill them.

The latter. Predator quests are never interesting, they just turn into a powertrip or people play it too safe and nothing ever happens.

As a hunter with set missions, you have a set story progression, room for twists and incentives to get things done, as well as having friendly NPCs that aren't a pet waifu or portable snack.

TLDR: Garo quest would work better than Horror quest.

Oh. Planning to have this quest more focused on weapons/medieval-styled combat with magic here and there, but it's considered dangerous and it has more flaws than pros so it's used sparingly. Thus, it's going to be hard to find someone who can reverse a spell, especially a forbidden one.

>....without a body? That's gonna be interesting.

This idea has circled around in my head for a while.

It's a journal-styled post-apocalyptic quest. You essentially read the journal entries of a survivor of the apocalypse and decide what he did during the day described in his journal and what his plans for tomorrow and beyond is. You're also constantly kept up to date on how much food/water he has left, what kind of clothes he has, weapons/ammo (if he has found any), if he has any companions etc.

Possibly just going for a one-shot at first, but if it's interesting and people enjoy it, I could expand on it, give the MC a "longer" goal etc.

Any thoughts?

Would anyone be interested in an apocalyptic quest? General premise is that a meteor hits the Earth, and everything gets fucking destroyed. After one of my favorite quests just abruptly stopped, I wondered why any QM would ever just give up and drop their quest, especially if it has a ton of fans. Now that I have my own, I can kind of understand it. It can get pretty draining and a lot of times I kinda just wanna give up on it. But I'm still chugging away.
>>
>>44804358
The reason I gave up on mine is because it didn't feel like my players was enjoying it anymore. The threads were dead between updates. No discussion, no questions, nothing. Just vote, write, vote, write.

It was disgustingly boring and I had around 15+ players.

Say I'm hopping on the band wagon or whatever, but I am thinking about running a Star Wars quest in the same vein as Star Wars Errant, where the QMC is a survivor of Order 66 and must survive in the galaxy, dealing with and being pursued by Inquisitors, Bounty Hunters, and various other scum of the galaxy.

The opening would most likely be just prior to the execution of Order 66, and the QMC must survive it.

Thoughts?
>>
>>44804446
>15+
I don't think I've ever had that many. :C
>>
>>44804472
Interesting, but what would the QMC's goal be? Gotta let the players have a goal to work towards and not aimlessly wander the galaxy.
>>
>>44804358
QMing is a volunteer/charity job. If you don't keep a controlled pace your motivation can suffer. It's like tabletop night falling off and the disillusion it builds up.
>>
>>44804446
>15+
I've got a similar situation, but my player count is about... three. Typically only one or two votes total, though. I may run another quest sometime after I wrap this one up, because I do love to write and I enjoy making things for people to enjoy.

I just seem kind of bad at it.

>>44804358
Don't give up, anon. It's a labor of love!
>>
>>44804587
I find having to run back to back or "every other day" quest threads to be unusually stressful.
>>
>>44804587
>>44804626
Probably just going to pick up the job of doing one-shots every day or so.
>>
>>44804626
That would definitely drain you. I can see doing back-to-back threads occasionally, but not for any length of time.

Every other day seems a little extreme as well, but maybe not for people who run relatively shorter threads? Like smaller mini-threads, rather than the usual 6-14 hours.
>>
>>44804587
Yeah, but you should see the suptg archive. It starts out with threads being purple, then sloooowly slipping to green, now white. I have a couple very loyal players, and I am thankful for them, but it sucks making a Quest that nobody really gives a damn about anymore. Each Quest day is becoming more of a chore than a fun diversion.
>>
> Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.
>/tg/
>>
>>44804686
It feels like doing what QTG suggests as "run the first few threads back to back" or something is like this HUGE hump I have to get over, but I get exhausted somehow easily over it? So it becomes kind of preferable for me to just run for less threads than I think.
>>
>>44804692
Not many people vote on suptg anymore, just like more people bookmark twitter links rather than follow you through twitter proper.
>>
>>44803723
>>44803753
Ironic.
>>
>>44804777
You don't run back to back, you just run longer or more often to get things going, cover time zones, and make sure you can have a semblance of an schedule.
>>
>>44804692
Which quest?

And that's normal for most threads. You always get hype voters at first, and then it kinda dwindles down and stablizes around high-white/low-green. Take a look at some other decent quests that don't boast XBOXHUEG levels of followers.

Not to discredit you though, I understand how that kind of thing can be discouraging. On one hand, the votes don't really matter outside of personal good feels.

On the other, feeling good is one of the driving forces that keeps QMs happy and wanting to go on.

It's a delicate balance, to be sure.

>>44804777
Back to back may not be necessary, but maybe start your threads running every other day, or every two days. By no means KEEP this schedule, but maybe for the first week or so. The logic behind this is exposure-area. You want to cast a decently wide net for your players, because people tend to get lots of "curiosity nibbles" at the beginning. This crowd will die off rapidly, but the larger your initial net, the more chance you have of a decently sized dedicated following. Once your first,. lets say week is over (2-4 threads that week? Or whatever you can handle!), set a more lenient schedule for yourself.

Lie low and not die. Maybe seek out or form a Rebellion, since this would take place at about 18 or 19 BBY.

Create a hidden Jedi Order? Find surviving Jedi?

There are plenty of end goals for the players to choose from.
>>
>>44804955
Nah, doesn't sound very good. You need a definite goal the players can band together to aim for, otherwise you're just roaming around.

Create the QMC first and then think in his/her shoes. What would this QMC do after something like Order 66?
>>
>>44804692
who gives a shit about suptg votes?

But I do feel there needs to be some sort of callsign that the QM would like more discussion, that they are totally fine with players taking their own liberties with some undefined parts of the setting/story.
>>
>>44804803
This.

And this is a relatively new thing, too.

Anyone remember when supTG was considered the only place to index quests? Quests like PGQ and SQ were getting +40 +50 votes every thread?

Now it's rare to see a +15 thread. People are finding that it's easier to search twitter than it is to search the archive.

I was going to let the players build the QMC up from scratch. I might create several templates to choose from. This would most likely have some sort of impact on the QMC's goal. Perhaps instead of having a definite goal in the beginning I'll drop hints and point the players in a certain direction. Is this a good idea?

Pardon me, I've never run a quest before.

Sigh. Why do you people never learn?
>>
>>44805097
Yeah, people are a lot more conservative with votes in this day and age. Which makes the 20+ quests actually worth looking at, or they are just bandwagons.

And fills me with pride how my only non-20+ is a new thread.
>>
>>44804955
You don't have any plot hooks, anon, just a vague concept. You need to flesh it out more.

Did the MC have a padawan? Where are they/what happened to them? Were you separated from them before O66 for any reason? If so, how can you rendezvous with them?

Similarly, did you have any friends or rivals in the Jedi Order? Any friends or contacts outside the order, for that matter? Any way to touch base with them?

Conversely, did you make any enemies over the course of the war willing to take advantage of your current situation? Any shifty, morally dubious motherfuckers on the edge of the law willing to aid you...for a price?

A war veteran and genocide survivor is gonna have a hell of a lot of history, you need to take advantage of that fact instead of trying to make him a blank slate
>>
>>44805119
no, just no. We have enough of that sort of "never run a quest before" crashing and burning before the third story post.
>>
>>44805097

>>
>my current favorite quest is back and seems to be going strong

yesss

>>
>>44805019
There's no reward for writing nice updates. The hype and discussion mostly occur when things are HAPPENING or some striking element turns up.

QMs just won't get much hype from neatly and properly moving their story along, and giving prompts trains players to answer them.
>>
>>44804886
I'll keep that on the down-low, I don't want to sound like I'm desperate for followers or anything. Plus if any of my followers did notice me say I was getting tired, I'd worry they'd lose faith in me.
>>44804922
>>44805019
The votes are a good judge of whether or not you're reaching an audience of people who enjoy it. Lots of votes means you're not just talking to a wall the whole time you're running. It's motivation. My quest doesn't get a whole lot of discussion or meta threads (though I'm glad there's no meta threads, that'd put it in a bad light) so that's about all I can really judge it by.
>>
>>44805395
>show you like a quest by talking about it and engaging in interesting discussion
>show you like a quest by doing a boring vote process on a platform mainly used for archive binging
I know which one I'd prefer.

So I'd rather find ways to get discussion going than encourage votes.

nope most of that shit leads down a stupid road

>This would most likely have some sort of impact on the QMC's goal. Perhaps instead of having a definite goal in the beginning I'll drop hints and point the players in a certain direction. Is this a good idea?

a good Idea usually is to take the meta talk and flavour the character with it, for example struggling to choose between two options when the playerbase is divided by two options
>>
>>44805468
No, not historical fiction. Original setting.
>>44805465

There's non-smut on Akun, and the chat can make things seem more alive (more post per minute rather than bursts). However, without genre and fetish peddling, your numbers won't be in close to the smut ones.

The timer, live show and integrated archive can make people more likely to catch up. That said, don't trust the counter much, don't let votes linger too much and get suspicious of a high voter turnout.

I don't recall suggesting freeform. I also need to go soon.

There's a newbie QM pic floating around, you have the pastebin up top, and there are tons of quests that you can look and judge for yourself if that's the kind of thing you want.

A certain way of doing things is never strictly better, the problem is only when it's either incompatible with what you're trying to do, or if you implement it really badly because you don't actually know how to do it.

>>
>>44806234
You just need to give them a goal. Or hell, give them multiple goals and let them choose which ones to pursue and which ones to abandon. Do you go on a rescue mission to save your padawan or help a friend of yours who's still loyal to the Jedi sneak off of Corusant and trust your padawan to get him/herself to safety?

Do you trust that bounty hunter that you've clashed with multiple times over the course of the war who is now offering you the only job a fugitive like you can find or do you instead try to dog in deep and go underground?

Bait some hooks for your players to chase and have a plot go organically around that. It's also a good idea to come up with some good neutrals, allies, and antagonists to bounce around the board and throw at your players before the quest even begins. Maybe a clone commando squad that did several covert ops with the MC and are now using their intimate knowledge of you to track you down or the tried and true old friend/rival who went Full Sith
>>

How would anyone feel about a Gritty Mech quest? An anon pitched their AC influence version last week, and it so far made me want to run one too.

You'd take on the role of one of the trainees from the first wave of an alien invasion, placed into cryo-sleep indefinitely due to Human error during the ending stages of said wave. You'd transition to an unspecified time in the future where you'd find Earth devastated, the last bastions of resistance either pathetically understaffed, people profiteering from the alien tech, or misguided guerrilla forces bumbling around aimlessly.

You must spearhead major offensive actions against a technologically and numerically superior foe, hoping that you can surviving pilots or inspire enough hope to unite what remains of humanity against the alien menace.

Mech action galore too, because that's a given.

I could use some advice, /wqdt/!

I feel like my quest doesn't have meaningful choices. My players aren't complaining, but I can tell that a lot of the votes feel like a waste of time, that the decisions they make don't really change much, and that really bothers me. The plot does have important divergence points, but those can sometimes end up far away from each other, and I need to somehow keep things engaging as I build up to the next major point, since I understand that I'm not just writing a novel here. My updates sometimes take a lot of time so I feel pressured to bump the thread with something, but I never know how to make that 'something' interesting.

How do you handle the decisions between the important, game-changing ones?

So I just got finished binge watching all of GATE up until last week's episode.

What I'm curious about related to quests, is how you fellows think an AMERICAN version might be. If it'd be any fun or not to be a grunt on the ground providing FREEDOM to qtpie bunny girls and elves and such while eliminating the tyranny of an oppressive Empire?

I mean, I figure that if there's anything that would get the American people pumped up and ready to fill some fucking savages with lead, it would be an invasion force that slaughters innocents and takes American Civilians as sex slaves and physical labor, being worked to death in mines.

I think the potential here is pretty damn good.

If anyone needs a quick 'tldr' on what GATE is, I'd be happy to provide that as well. I'd just really like some feedback on this idea because damn if it doesn't make me excited.

No. Fan fiction quests are cancer and shoving your 'murican freedom shit down your players throats make it even worse.
