Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Pretty good deal.
How's the battery?
>>
Hello /g/, my x220 has a weird fucking problem, it only turns on via power button if i just immediately plugged the charger in seconds before pushing the button (fingerprint reader lights up when i plug that shit in); if the charger has been plugged for a while or if its only on batt the button does nothing at all, lights up and shit but won't power up. The batt only holds charge for 20 mins so its rip anyways.

What's the culprit? This shit is annoying as fuck, i hope i don't have to swap the whole mobo.
>>
To echo my post from previous thread...

X201T finally gave, I'm looking for a replacement, preferably a newer gen. Currently weighing between X220T and X230T. Can you guys give some suggestions? I'm basically looking for something that can handle my side job (translating), hobby (drawing stuff) and mid-tier gaming.

Biggest problem for me was the overheating, even heat up the entire laptop if used too long.

Third world country, services may or may not be readily available.

it's decent for a Lenovo era "Thinkpad" if we're talking way below the MSRP

At least you can get an IPS panel for it even if its 15" 1080

Don't expect anything from the battery either, you'll need a couple of 9 cells to be comfortable for heavy daily use

Sup /tpg/, this came in earlier today and I just finished setting it up. I have never used such a high quality product before, I can't believe what I've been missing out on.

Since it came with a fresh install of W7 Pro, I'm going to buy a USB to SATA cable, a larger SSD, and clone the current one and use that instead, and keep the original as a backup.

I wanted to ask, and I got a partial answer the last thread - I notice the thinkpad has a bunch of drivers and software specifically for it, how would some of the keys/buttons perform on Linux then?
Would you lose some of the functionality of the thinkpad on Linux due to not having those drivers and keys responding the same way?
>>
I plan on buying a thinkpad x220 soon, and I plan on maxing it out, and I plan on upgrading it and possibly adding a new display, since I heard that the ones available in them suck.

Is anyone aware of a FHD IPS display that would work in one without any hardware mods?
>>
>>55501428
Two things, consider getting x230 and doing the x220 keyboard mod, and also you may be surprised in regards to the stock screen.

I am the post right above you, and with my laptop I also ordered an HD capable lcd cable so I could replace the panel - when I booted the T430 and saw the matte screen and the way it displayed it was good enough, functional.

I've been pretty happy with my P50. Runs photoshop like a champ, and has good battery life. Pretty easy to transport and the fingerprint reader is fast. Startup including fingerprint loggin is only a few seconds. The 1080p screen is a little blurry for text though but i havent really noticed it after getting used to it.

Ubuntu takes to it really well if your into that (although you will lose the fingerprint reader).

I almost got the P50 but settled on the P50s.

I think I made a good choice. The 12-15 hour battery life and decent GPU seems better than 5 hours max with a beefy GPU I can only use in bursts without murdering the battery.

Do you max out your CPU/GPU a lot? That seems like the deciding factor.

I'm in the market for a new laptop and Thinkpads have come to my attention, specifically the T420.

How are the heat and noise production on a T420, assuming I'll have Windows 7 running with about 10-15 tabs open in my browser, watch some YouTube videos, write documents in Word and occasionally watch some chink cartoons?

The NVS 4200m is only marginally better than the integrated graphics. At least for gaming performance. Quadro graphics are meant for commercial/business applications, which is what these laptops were intended for originally.

I have the 4200m in my 420s, and I leave it turned off in the BIOS. It just sucks battery and isn't better than integrated. Plus, for some reason, Fedora absolutely hates it and I couldn't be bothered to figure out why.

I am pretty sure the graphics 'card' itself isn't replaceable. When I got my 420s I took it apart to re-paste the processor, and found that both it and the graphics chip are soldered to the motherboard. Not sure about the regular 420, but I would bet the graphics chip is also soldered.

It is perfectly capable still, in terms of general use cases. It will probably still be usable for a few years before it starts to show its age.

I'd go for either the 450 or 460, depending on screen preference. If 1080p is important, maybe the slight extra cost is justified. The i3 in either would be adequate for general usage, and would give amazing battery life.

The HP is a beast, and would act like a beast. I wouldn't want that unless I actually needed the power it has.

honestly I don't care much about those few extra pixels, however the T450 TN display and T460 IPS one differ a lot in terms of brightness and viewing angles. also, brightness-wise, the 8470p one is close to the T460 one.

Guys, I have a T410 and am running Linux (ubuntu, but who cares).

Should I just switch to Intel integrated graphics on my i5?
>>
>>55508719
>act like a beast
I'm talking battery and power consumption. That i7 and graphics adapter would be very power hungry. If battery life is important to you, the HP would be a poor choice.

My T420s screen (TN 1600x900) was quite a shock when I got it. I know it's horrible, but I have become used to if after a couple months. When I get some spare cash I may do the 1080p IPS upgrade.

Anyone know where to find X220 IPS panels in Europe for decent prices? Most of the authentic ones I see being sold go for hundreds of euros. Is it worth it just to buy a random one from China?
>>
>>55509995
Found this:
http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/IBM-Lenovo/THINKPAD%20X220%204286-25U/?set_currency=USD

IPS is about $70 US, but they don't have any in stock in the UK, only in US. You can check shipping and taxes to see if it's less than other places.

>>
>>55510211
Thanks, I've seen this one before. It's unfortunate that they don't have any UK stock, since shipping is about $40 to where I live from the US. I'll probably F5 that till they get UK stock.

Seems the cheapest option currently are Chinese vendors on Amazon, but I've read that you might get stuck with any of the random panel variants (some have issues with ghosting, etc.).
>>
>>55510609
Yeah, if you want a good quality screen you have to buy from a reputable source.

Another option you might try is to keep your eye out for a "parts" x220. You might be able to find a physically damaged one that still has a good (hopefully IPS) screen for cheap.

Guys I need some advice

I was careless when opening up my T420 for a deep clean, and didn't notice my left speaker's wire was right in the path of a backplate screw. Of course I found out about this when I booted it back up, saw speakers didn't work, opened it again and saw pic related

Is it easy to somehow fix this by cutting up the external bit of the cord and manually coiling up the internal wires or something? Or should I just get a replacement pair of speakers for the equivalent of 5 burgerbucks?

I know, I know, it was really careless and stupid of me. I guess I shouldn't have done it while distracted

I want to get an IBM made thinkpad. Which models weren't cucked by Lenovo?
>>
>>55508855
I need to know this too, honestly. I've been thinking about buying a thinkpad because I like the keyboards and build quality, but the poor display seems like a big problem.

Does the HD IPS screen swapped T420 have comparable display to budget (~$500) modern laptops?
>>
>>55511152
The last IBM made model was the T43, I believe.
>>
>>55511337
the fhd mod kit is out of stock until 2017. you could get a t440 or t450 and swap a fhd ips screen in for under $500 though
>>
>>55510214
Fuck yes
>>
>>55511152
T43 and X41 were the last IBM only thinkpads
T43p has lelnovo components, and the T60 + T43p were the first with lenovo logos

If you want an IBM made thinkpad, you cant go wrong with a good T42, 14" ones are common, cheap, pretty powerful for their age as maxing out with a 2ghz pentium m and 2gb of ram is cheap, but a 15" one will cost about 20$ more and finding one with the 128mb graphics chip will be difficult.

the first runs of the T60 do have just the IBM logo with no Lenovo logo on the screen bezels, however, the internals still contain lenovo parts

that really doesnt matter unless you have a vendetta against lenovo, but if what you're going for is just the IBM aesthetic, a no-lenovo logo T60 would be a great machine

Perfect temps, repasted my X220 2 weeks ago. 50's pretty much as low as you're gonna get, and if you do ever go very high 90-95 is the highest you want to go, and only when the laptop is at its max workload possible

Any updates on the retro thinkpad, next year's X270/T470/W570, or that mod to an old thinkpad (I think it was an X60 or X61 but with a modern cpu in)

Also last I heard the T420's 1080p screen mod worked mostly fine but some had screen refresh issues, and the X220's 1080p mod forces you to give up the displayport and makes the laptop think the screen is an external monitor. Did the X220 get any further, or is it physically impossible to have a higher res screen with its connectors?

And are there any T420 IPS mods that don't recquire more than just replacing the screen

If you don't do graphics heavy things the dream thinkpad is the T601 frankenpad

If you gotta get out more / use better cpu and graphics / better battery life for use outside the house, it's between the X220 and T420 for me

Gun pointed to head - X220, biggest reason is IPS vs those T420 TN panels

>>55512398
Just gonna play devil's advocate here

My X220 has:
Better keyboard
Better build quality
Better internal roll cage for drop protection
An easy compartment to replace ram fast
Option for 16GB of ram not just 8GB
Easier keyboard replacing
Far far much better graphics performance due to PCIe slot that I can use an eGPU with
A 9 cell battery that extends behind the laptop with a grip so I can hold it 1 handed
Drain holes in case of spilling
Better hinges for the screen
Can replace hard drive without opening up the entire thing

I know the X260 has other advantages but right now even if I had all the money in the world I'd prefer my X220 over a new X260 - the tradeoffs / things missing in the X260 are too great for its kinda better screen, battery life and cpu for my uses

Hello /tpg/ can you explain something to me please?

I just got my t430 and it came with a smaller 120gb SSD which I imagine is used as well. I set up Windows 7 last night by installing the good updates and manually removing the telemetry updates and actions in the task scheduler, so I have a ready to use W7 install with all of the thinkpad drivers on it.

I want to make an exact clone of the SSD onto a new one, how do I go about doing that?
What software is recommended that isn't adware or something, and what kind of USB to SATA cable do I need to buy?

I see some on ebay like pic related where its just a direct USB3.0 port to the sata, and some that come with a little 12V power connector as well.
Do I run a risk of frying something if I don't buy the one with the little power adapter?

Keyboard is the last good Gnupad keyboard.

Buy a HDD bay for the disk drive and USB 3.0 slots for the xpress card (34mm). If you want as performance boost buy a SSD

If your buying the Amazon refubs, buy a new battery with it.

The screen doesn't bother me but if you are interested look for the 1600x900 ones.

I did a little research about this for my T60 a few years ago
What it does at least for the T60 it will fully drain the ultrabay battery before touching the main battery. Its really not very good because fully discharging li-ion batteries is terrible for its health

I don't know if newer models resolve this issue and stagger the discharge rate but I doubt lenovo would put any effort into making a better product

I just ordered one. I like to use my laptop on battery, and the main one just doesn't last as long as I'd like.

It would be nice to figure out a way to only have it drain it to a certain point then switch over.

i dont know why when they make the t430 they switched all the ports' positions

i swear the layout of the ports on the side of the t420 is superior

Someone give me reasons to be a good goy and buy a msata ssd, i can't find any.

Come on you dumbasses spend so much on upgrades to bring Rhodes shitty laptops up to speed and they still don't match the speed and battery efficiency of the XPS 13.

I can't afford an xps 13 so I got a used t420. It works fine for me.
