Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Are there any thinkpads sold with 6gb ram? 4gb ram isn't enough in some cases, but the ones with 8gb are too expensive. Or would be a dumb decision to buy thinkpad with 4gb and add additional ram to it?

I really really really dislike the tiny ass left shift on the ISO - I want my left pinkie to do no more than slide down from the A button for the Shift button, whether to capitalize letters or if I'm playing games or using keyboard shortcuts in an OS or software
Whereas as far as the Enter key is concerned, both are fine as all I do is move my right pinkie to the right a bit, so I hit both perfectly every time. It is more fun to slam on an ANSI enter key with middle + index finger though after typing a lotta shit. Feels fun man.

I would always and have always prefered ANSI as a whole, to the point where nearly every product i've gotten in the last 20 years I ordered from US to UK for that layout, and the one laptop I had some 8 or 9 years ago that was bought in the UK I was forever unhappy with its keyboard layout.

https://ultimatehackingkeyboard.com/blog/2015/09/09/ansi-or-iso-which-keyboard-layout-is-more-ergonomic

Funnily enough it seems that quite a few yuropoors prefer merican layout, more so than prefer yurop layout funnily enough

X220 w/ eGPU playing new DOOM on medium giving 60+fps - 75-80 degrees

Same X220 in bed without an eGPU connected streaming a measly 720p 60fps stream - 95 degrees

I really don't understand software at all anyway, but it is still so fucking puzzling to me that a 2520M dual fucking core can easily do near PC levels of gameplay with a 4 year old GPU (im talkin 144fps on a 144hz monitor on competitive games, and 60fps+ on medium at 1080p on pretty much any modern game including bam ham nig) but does completely crap on most emulators despite not going over 30% CPU usage. I get emulators use the CPU more but it's not even under max load, can someone explain that for a complete retard such as myself? Are modern gpus just a scam? Has CPU technology stagnated or something? Are games just very well optimized nowadays?

This eGPU gimmick took me months to fix all these silly driver errors and the confusion having to try so many different versions of Windows 7 and choosing what updates to install and which ones to not as it'd break the eGPU is nothing on the confusion that followed when I actually tested it out and saw its results.
The most graphically intense games run just fine, but the odd old game here or there barely runs

>>

>Are games just very well optimized nowadays?
No. The opposite, really.
>Has CPU technology stagnated or something?
Yes.

Most video games have shit optimization, but most of them aren't CPU reliant.

>Same X220 in bed without an eGPU connected streaming a measly 720p 60fps stream - 95 degrees

The video is probably being decoded by the CPU instead of the iGPU/eGPU.

The consumer plebtop of Thinkpads. Only worth getting if you're destitute and your use case absolutely demands Sandy Bridge's power. If you've got the budget, get a 1080p T520 or an IPS X220. If you can live with lesser specs, get a T410 or T400. If both money and specs are no concern, get a Flexview T60. The T420 is a cheap piece of shit compared to what came before.

What's the best lightweight (under 13 inch) thinkpad for running the Ubuntu 16.04? I've checked out the x220 and I like the look of the specs, but I'm looking for something that's going to be fast and light enough for travel. Storage space doesn't matter as I'll add my own SSD, which I already have.

Basically I'm worried about getting a daily driver computer that's 5+ years old because of how fast things change in the tech world.

X230 or an X220?

The keyboard doesn't bother me on either.
Battery life is priority - hence why I'm tending towards X230, but I can't deny the X220 is a nice machine
>>
>>55475487
I have both
The X200 works pretty well with GNU/Linux
The speakers are nicer on the X200 than the X220.

Does anyone here have an mSATA SSD in his X220?
I'm thinking of using one as the boot drive and using the leftover hdd for data. Are SATA2 speeds alright or would it be better to just replace the hdd with a 2.5 SSD (and a bigger mSATA for data)?

b-but I like the new "old" keyboard so far. And the screen consumes much less power, and it doesn't generate so much heat as the old screen. Oh, and these retarded ghosting windows are gone (IPS issue).
The most painful loss is HD4000 iGPU which is now HD3000, it's actually 50% slower. But thankfully I can now replace the wifi card without desoldering BIOS from the motherboard.
>>

I bought a used T61 and I took it from that. When I got it home, it wouldn't start, even though it worked fine when the guy showed it to me. I think I broke it as well while taking it home, which is somewhat impossible considering how well thinkpads are made.

I don't know. The world is against me again.

Define decent.

There are people still using the X60, X61, X200, X201, T43, T60, T61, T400, etc for light mobile tasks but you're not going to be able to play Skyrim or your 30GB BR rip 10bit animoos on it. All of the above should be able to be had for less than $100 if you shop smart.

If you're hard up for a 4:3 screen with more vertical space for programming, get a T/X60 or T/X61. Opt for the 1400x1050 screen. Just be aware that """modern""" websites with lots of media/flash content or anything above SD YouTube is going to lag and/or make the laptop run unreasonably hot.

If you'd rather have a bit of extra horsepower and are good with 16:10, try and land a X200/01 or a T400. Even then, realize that they're 8ish year old laptops. You're not going to be watching 30GB BR rip 10bit animoos or playing Skyrim on it.

hey
My current machine is piece of shit lenovo b570 (2g core i3, 410m vc) which is literally falling apart and its hinges are being held by fucking aluminum piece from an old CD drive.
So, I've been offered a t410 with locked bios, webcam and microphone, but bootmenu is working alright and everything else seems to function normally. The price is, umm, well... 10 thousand roubles, that's roughly 150$. I discussed the deal with my friend, he seems to consider this a nice deal.

Never owned a thinkpad but there is a x230 tablet on ebay that looks very clean. I am a little worried the bids will go high (over £200). Are they worth it over the normal x230? I use Ubuntu but could go back to Windows if the touchscreen is shit under linux.
>>
>>55486928
The touch screen is shit period. It's crude and mimics the mouse.
The wacom digitizer built in is very nice for it's price, considering it's a laptop on top with a nice cpu. A screen based digital art tablet is expensive, let alone a wacom brand.
Some people complain about the butchered resolution or the accuracy around the edges. I have no problem with them. Just don't draw in fullscreen.
I get by fine in xubuntu 16.04 with krita.

Sure eGPU kind of works out of the box on Linux these days. Even Nvidia Optimus/PRIME works with the official drivers. There are a few caveats though.
>No hot plugging
>Restart (log out) X.org when you enable PRIME
>Massive tearing when using PRIME with native iGPU output
>Switching resolutions on multi monitor setup is problematic and may result in hangs
>My system wont boot if cable is attached to eGPU

Some of the problems might just be the V8.0 EXP GDC Beast I have and using Nvidia for eGPU. PRIME support has its problems but it would be very convenient to use the native output if it worked with no problems. Using the eGPU output might be better supported and would allow for using red team offerings.

>>55488298
>>55488196
From what I've read the whitelist doesn't care about mSATA devices and only about true PCIe devices.
>>
>>55488818
Is your setup working properly for Windows, though?

Are you using which version of the EXP GDC? And if you're using the expresscard version, is it hotplugable?
>>
>>55488993
I haven't tried with Windows and don't have a readily available Windows installation for testing.

V8.0 Expresscard, there was warning about hotplugging so I'm not risking that. Also what I've read about X.org is that it won't like hotplugging GPUs anyways.

It's still working better than I expected under Linux even with the listed defects. There's also recent work in upstream Mesa which should reduce the tearing.

So my Lenovo T430 won't boot past the logo screen. The lights flicker when I turn it on but it doesn't make the normal boot up sound noise.

I've tried seeing whether it's because my USB ports are broken with the pins touching but they all seem perfectly fine. Battery tiers:
>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats (charged vs original design capacity, cycle count) so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

I have Thinkpad T440p that was getting around 60c on the HDD and 70-80c on CPU/GPU so I decided to take it apart and give it a good cleaning with pressured air in a can and replacing the thermal paste on the heatsinks. There wasn't much dust or shit like that to begin with.

After finishing up everything, I booted up the laptop and let it run idle for a few minutes with SpeedFan running, but the temperatures are not changing even when using cooling pad and it seems that the laptop fan is running on low RPM.

I'm mostly concerned about the HDD temps since around 55c is dangerously high for HDDs and I don't want my HDD to cook itself to death.

Also I can't get into the proper BIOS menu (Yes, I disabled UEFI and I'm using legacy mode) during boot. I press the enter key and it directs me into the Lenovo Recovery menu, so I can't check if you can set shit for fan speed in the BIOS.

Compare that to the T60 keyboard
The home/end navigation keys are configured just like on a normal keyboard I know exactly where they are just by feeling just like the brightness controls I know they are home and end

I think the neatest thing is my T60 has a thinklight but I have NEVER had to use it because the layout of the keyboard was just so fantastic

Get an X series along with a Display Port to HDMI.
Something like an X220/X230 or depending on the type of work possibly a T series.

I'm not absolutely certain, but given the long history Thinkpads have and how influential they were in the early days, I'd say it's everyone else who gets the fn/ctrl positioning wrong. I have a couple of old-ass Compaqs from the 486/Pentium I days with fn keys to the left of ctrl, too.

Running Debian - most of the buttons just work, the exceptions are:
The microphone mute button
The standard mute button (mutes all audio channels (master, headphone, and speakers) when engaging mute, only unmutes the master when changing it), there is a workaround for this, but I can't be arsed to apply it
The ThinkVantage button - no idea what I'd use it for anyway

that looks pretty damn nice, especially the dedicated navigation keys block

why don't they do this anymore with the chiclet keyboards?
