My hipster laptop and hipster OS just so happen to serve me really well in hipster role at my hipster admin job where I manage a bunch of hipster SPARC systems running hipster Solaris.

If you need more hipster fodder to use against me: I live in the Pacific Northwest, have a beard, drink expensive whiskey and gin, and drive an old Volvo. Oh, and I listen to shit you don't, like Youth Code, Babyland, and Einstürzende Neubauten.

Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good. (I know, subjective)

Green Spot (or Yellow, if you can find it) vs Johnnie Walker Blue.

Also, I'm fairly certain I worked with either you or maybe the person you replaced a few years ago.

And lastly, your irony for the day.

I have 3 bottles of this in my cabinet. I know it very well. Their Vodka is also good.

I'm about 60 miles south of their distillery, so I grab a couple bottles when I make it up to Seattle.

Not sure how often you get to Cali, but All Star Liqueur in Hilt (first exit on I5 S in Cali) has the Green Spot for $49. A buddy brought back a bottle from Dublin before it was imported, and it was glorious.

Yeah, have fun with that commute. Though it's only drinking time, which may or may not be better traffic. I do south Olympia to Redmond daily, but I'm paid well, and land is cheap as hell down here.

Lastly, if you're ever at Steel Creek in Tacoma, the brunette bar tenders free pour generously.

Yep. Average is about 900 miles / week.

But the schedule is flexible enough that I can show up at 2 and nobody cares.

We bought about 35 acres down here, and after final construction costs and such we're just over 400K. There was no way we were going to be able to do that up north.

And Voodoo Doughnut runs only take a few hours now.

But a lot of that shit is Unix or Windows-driven, newer ex-Unix offerings are probably using GNU/Linux though since Solaris x86 is an abortion unless you're a developer.
>>
>>55512275
>But a lot of that shit is Unix or Windows-driven
Define "A lot"

It's not. Some of it is, sure, but Nokia for example, ran Linux exclusively for their SFCS and PCB testers, most of which were P4 to Core 2.
>>
>>55512275
Bryan Lunkduke has a "Linux is Fucking Weird" presentation that breaks down a bunch of off the wall embedded systems that are Linux based.
>>
>>55512330
Can agree with you on semiconductor stuff, that equipment was dominated by Unix gear until recently, I toured a Micron fab about five years ago that was all Solaris, they were just starting to swap out their hoardes of Ultra 30s and pizza box SPARCStations for commodity Linux systems, since most of their software was probably in-house and easy to port over I assume. I've also got an SGI workstation that was used to drive an Ultrapointe wafer imaging system at an Intel fab, I bet they've replaced a lot of that with GNU/Linux as well.

Seems like a lot of other industrial equipment though is dominated by Windows systems and probably RTOSes too, at least what I've seen, XP is all over the place for stuff like machining, for example, and theres still plenty of crusty DOS/9x/NT stuff controlling older equipment.

>>55512479
I was never meaning to imply that Linux doesn't have a big piece of the embedded market.
>>
>>55511820
First off, CNC not C&C. It means Computer Numerical Control

Secondly, if the company has the money, even slight performance upgrades are worth the expense every few years.
>>
Why are ThinkPads so common on /g/? Explain like I'm stupid. I know next to nothing about laptops.
>>
>>55514891
Memes, hype and good old /g/ contrarianism. Great systems, but overly shilled by the kind of casual tryhard who thinks the only reason they're a shit developer is because their keyboard isn't clicky enough.
>>
>>55514891
OP here.
Honestly, it seems mostly driven by the fact that when they first became /g/'s go to suggestion, they were sturdy, easy to repair, and (most important of all) cheap. The keyboards on pre T*30 models being excellent likely had something to do with it.
For my money, modern Dell and HP business class systems are what to use now. Still cheap, still easy to fix, maybe the keyboard is not as nice, but overall purpose built and supremely functional.
Use case does make a difference, however. I don't game much, do AutoCAD, edit video, or render so I'm not fussed about having a good video card. So if someone is looking to do one of those, they likely should look at a different solution.
Honestly, the reason I made use of the systems I did today is because (A) I had them on hand (B) My better spec'ed systems see more versatile use (work issues MBP triple booted, and an HP 2570p running Debian) while the Slackware system today is entirely to serve as a step above a dumb terminal in the DC.
