I agree police force is too excessive. Punishing somebody permanently and irreversibly is not justice. It could be argued this was in self defense, but if police were properly trained to deal with conflict, the officer could have dealt with the situation using nonlethal force. Lethal force should be a last resort; was shooting that guy really the only way the officer could have handled that situation? It seems like police don't see civilians as valuable humans like themselves that have lives.

It's hardly a question of whether it was worth it or if the officer, from hindsight ought to have done something different.
The guy clearly posed enough of a risk, was aggressive and uncontrollably drunk/high and was wielding a weapon and charging the officer with it.
If you were in the policeman's place with a gun in your hand and a guy still crazy enough to charge you, you would have shot too, because at that point there is no telling what the crazy fucker will do. It is far better to train an officer to defend himself and the rest of the public first than allow a risk like that to be unmet with a force to stop the guy.
I do agree that ideally a taser could have done the same job, but for one thing they can be unreliable (NOT something you want to deal with with a crazy fucker charging you) and for another when someone actually attacks you out of nowhere, the second most effective means of stopping them is not what you are instinctively going to reach for.

I fucking hate it when people say this(I hear it a lot, mostly from liberals). There's so many reasons why this statement is stupid. First of all, its way harder to shoot someones legs than it is to shoot their center mass, especially if they are moving, and if you are scared its even harder. Even if you do manage to hit someones legs, there's no guarantee that they will go down. Secondly, if you shot someone in the legs in a self defense situation, when you go to court you could be sued for it, since if you had enough time to shoot someone in the legs in that kind of a situation, your life wasn't endangered enough to warrant that kind of force. A police officer would loose his job and be imprisoned for trying to pull some John Woo bullshit.

First, there isn't a "safe" place to shoot a human. In the head and torso are vital organs. The arms and legs have major blood vessels that, if compromised, will cause a human to bleed out. Also keep in mind that only a relative handful of people have pinpoint accuracy with firearms. There is a certain degree of error from point of aim to point of impact determined by shooter's skill and circumstance. Spoilers: most cops aren't required to be excellent marksmen. For the most part, departments only require them to be competent with their issued pistol, and any further training is done at the officer's initiative.
Since we've determined that it's difficult to get exact placement of a shot in any reliable manner, let's further debunk the idea of shooting the attacker's weapon. Not only is this generally impractical, but also incredibly dangerous to the environment. Bullets don't just vanish if they miss a bad guy. Depending on cartridge, a pistol bullet can travel dozens to hundreds of yards once fired. A responsible shooter must be aware of what is beyond their target so as to avoid needlessly endangering the lives of others in the environment. This is commonly cited among the cardinal rules of firearm safety.
Lastly, why do we expect police officers to respond to lethal force with non-lethal force. Would you consider an aluminum bat a non-lethal weapon in the hands of a police officer? It's quite any easy thing to bash a human skull into pieces. Tazers and pepper spray are compliance devices meant to pacify already subdued suspects who continue to resist arrest. Firearms are self-defense devices meant to deescalate a deadly situation by force.
