Post your vector requests and recently done vectors here.
>Previous thread → >>1888611

READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING!

>Before requesting, here are some tips:
– Request an image ONCE per thread. Do not bump or second - once is enough.
– Check the lists below to see if your request has already been previously fulfilled.
– All requests are welcome, within reason, but remember:
– The poorer the quality of an image (in resolution and drawing ability), the less likely it will be picked up. The more detail seen and higher the resolution, the better.
– Full-body images preferred. Images cut off on 3 or more sides are very unlikely to be picked up due to their limited usage; keep this in mind when finding an image to request. (Hair or skirt edges that are barely cut off don't usually count)
– Requests for removing the background from an image (called a RENDER) and resizing requests should go to the IMT threads.
– Refrain from using renders for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.
– Note: Overly complicated images are unlikely to be picked up due to their nature. IF your request is taken, please have patience.

>>
>>1897322
>>1897308
I could be wrong about this but unless you actually own the original content then you cannot issue a take down notice, even the vectors we make are still technically owned by the original artist so it would be up to them to issue the take down,
you can still report them for Deliberate Misuse/breaking terms and conditions etc.
>>
>>1897308
If you made a vector go ahead and try but we don't own the copyright. The company that made it or the company that licensed it to the US technically do. It is a dick move.
I didn't see anything of mine on there so I can't try myself.

some prior discussion on what happened the last time someone was selling stuff from these threads on amazon: https://archive.nyafuu.org/w/thread/1640606/#1642489
>>
>>1897356
Yeah i remember the last time this came up
i am interested to know just what is legal with vector tracing because from what i could see
Tracing is legal and within everyone's right to upload to deviant Art as their own, so long as:
- the original artist does not object in any way
- the tracing does not contain elements of the original (i.e. a direct copy)
- the artwork does not adversely affect the original artist (in which case the artist may sue for damages)

since the vector traces here are basically direct copies that would make them illegal?
>>
>>1897356
Interesting. I was interested in asking some anons who made vectors if it was cool to use them in some stickers I was planning on printing and selling to other anons but after lurking for a little bit I've rethought about it.

I've asked someone who is apart of the /w/ group on dA a long ways past and they said no to selling the design even though it was modified a bit.

>>1897365
personally, I'm cool with it so long as it's sold at cost. I know it's been done before, and it really just comes down to the person who did the vector.

> I have found 11 vectors that i done on there, it would be pretty amusing to send them a take down notice to scare them a bit but i would likely be committing perjury in doing so which is definitely not worth the trouble.

Still send it, anyways - you can say that you traced them not to be sold.

It's one of the reasons why I always say not fo use for sale or profit.
>>
>>1897361
>since the vector traces here are basically direct copies that would make them illegal?
Yes.. and no. IF er sold them, then it would be illegal, I don't sell mine, and only use them for personal things like backgrounds or stickers and some posters. I have a disclaimer on my page saying they are not for sale or profit, and I do not put them up on DevArt as sale for prints, and I only make the .ai files available for a limited time, as well as for use for non-profit ventures (like someone making their own one-off shirt).

That's great, I'm looking forward to it!

If it's any use to you, I could also provide you the original pdf file measuring 7014x9920, which I converted into that jpg, since I scanned the image myself. For that matter I could always try to do another scan in case the image quality made it inadequate to work with. The file at hand is the best result I got after several attempts, but I realize the quality still isn't perfect. (The little smudge on her hair annoys me for example, but I don't know if it would pose any problem for vectoring.)

>>1897453
Now that's a bleak notion, since it would be nothing short of a miracle if there ever was a second season, much less a third one. I'd rather keep my fingers crossed that I just got lucky.

Yes.. and no.. It's going to give them a rigidity that you might not like.

A trick I have started to use: Make the first line as a stroke, Copy it, paste it under the other, then link the two with the pen tool, and do adjustments that way. Works great for larger frill trends, and helps keep the sanity of where you left off with your nodes and parrallelizing them.

also, because you're moving them and are not a machine, you're not going to get 100% precise, and you'll also get that more "organic" flow to it...

>>
>>1899927
It's not too bad. Pick one of the hair fills you like and use it as a reference for the others. When working on hair, the distance between the two nodes at the V tip is important for thickness, so make sure you pay attention to that so as well.

>>
>>1899927
The only other thing I can think of, is to look at the second one in (going left-to-right). THIS one is the one you should make all the others be like for thickness. It still has its issues, but overall, the swoop of the curves, and the point at the corner is closest to the ideal you'll want to use.

Try making them all like this, and see how you had to fix each to do so. Remember to keep your nodes and your handles parallel to one another. Also remember that the lengths of the levers don't always have to be the same, either...

Good, but now you have TWO lines for her hair, instead of one in that area for the hole. Look back at the original, and you'll see it...
>>
>>1900311
Not bad. Some things to keep in mind for th future:
* When making a flower, etc. where there is just one thing like a petal repeating for 5-6 items, make just one of the petals.
* Copy the petal and paste it.
* Take that new petal and rotate it to fit in the next section.
* Repeat these steps as necessary.

This works with multilayered flowers, as well. If you look at the flowers I have on my belldandy image, all the flowers that have individual petals going in a wheel are made form one or two individual petals copy-pasted and rotated.. It makes the work not only look more symmetrical, but most petal flowers *especially used as symbols) were made with this easier method. It's not a matter of symmetry, as it is, in this case, consistency.

Hope that helps.

Suggestion? Make the lines not so parallel to one another? Take the top line, go to the lowest point (near her arm) and lift that end juuuuust a little bit. This way, because of how it is, makes it look almost like a duplication error...

No, I hadn't looked here. I kind of agree but don't - there are women out there with more "blurred" nipple transitions for their areola, but they are rare. I'd go with a solid to solid transition.

Also: the hilight on her nipple on the areola looks like it's fake. Either make it lighter and softer (a blur at like 20% opacity) or remove it altogether.

Are vectors hard to do, or are there just few people who actually do them?
I sometimes lurk here and there's always a large difference in the people who request them versus the people who actually do them I've noticed.

Also requesting this, if it's even possible.
>>
>>1901081
They're hard in the sense that most people don't have the patience to do them. Considering we work with filled lineart, it adds a considerable amount of time to vectors. It also requires that you maintain consistency between line thicknesses and make sure nodes and handles are parallel at all times, which can be hard to grasp at first. You then of course have to color the image, which can either be very easy, or fairly complex and difficult depending on the source image.

This all adds up to a lot of time. Easy closeup anime screencaps can be 2-6 hours, simple fanart around 6-12 hours, more complex fanart can be 20-25 hours, with full body ones taking 30-40 hours. It continues to go up and up the more complex and detailed it gets, with a little over 100 hours being the most time I've personally spent on a vector.

Considering you have to put in a lot of time and be patient in order to do these kinds of images, most people simply don't try, or quit early on. This is why there are so few of us who are willing to do images requested. I've personally had very little time to devote to vectors since I am finishing up school, so I have been fairly silent these past few months, but I try to get some vector requests in when I can (7 in the last 4 months).

As for your image, it is certainly possible, but would require significant recoloring due to the lighting. It would be better to find an image in more neutral coloring, or a fanart image of the character. You are still at the whim of someone being interested in whatever image you request, so your best chance is always trying it yourself.

Found the issue. All of your opacity masks were causing the weird lines to appear. It actually does appear in Illustrator as you zoom in and out at specific moments. I released all the opacity masks and used the Alt-click+Minus Front on the fills to make them Compound Shapes instead. This fixed the issue. I can't tell you why the opacity masks caused it, but use compound shapes instead for the rest of the image.

Here are a couple other things to note. When working with large source images, it is best to unembed the image to reduce filesize. Click the original image in Illustrator, click the gold text of the file name at the top left and click "Relink." Then, find the image in your file directory and double click to have it link to the file. This will reduce the filesize from 38MB to 12MB. If you need to give the file to someone, then you just put the Ai file and original image in a folder and ZIP it so the link is maintained. You can go one step further and do "Save As" and uncheck "Create PDF Compatible File," which will reduce the filesize to about 1MB. Unchecking the PDF compatibility means you can't open it in anything but Illustrator, but you can always do "Save As" again when you're done to check it back on. Doing those two things should make the file run better, and reduce the time significantly when saving.

Here is the file with the changes made: https://my.mixtape.moe/sugflo.zip

What is the approximate amount of time that it tales to get proficient at this? I would love to contribute to the thread a bit but it seems fairly involved, I'm sure more than a couple of the contributors in this thread have professional experience
>>
>>1902179
At the time I started, the thread didn't have the guidelines and tutorials that we have now. The vector tutorial in the OP at the time told me to use strokes for the lines, and then fill in the color with the paint bucket. I think it was about a year in that I felt like I could adequately contribute and fulfill requests. But with the new, more in-depth tutorials we have, a lot of the new names around here are picking it up fairly quick. So just watch the tutorials, try to do some vectors, post them, and listen to the feedback.
I do not have any professional experience, but some of the other vectorers here do. I think understanding the tools (Illustrator, Inkscape, etc.) and an abundance of time is all you need, though.
>>
>>1902179
As stated by JPGC: the time depends on how long you take to do the image - the more time and care spent on it, the more it'll look better, the more proficient you become.

Anyone can learn how to vector - it's just whether anyone would invest the TIME into the vector, that's the problem. If you can't take the time, it might not be the thing for you - otherwise, try the tutorials, pick one up, and post here for suggestions.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I'm excited to see actual progress being made, thanks!

If I might add in another hopefully constructive remark: I'd subdue the folds you supplemented on the right side somewhat, since they're technically not folds at all, but rather ribbed sleeves/edges. She has tied a sort of cardigan or sweater around around her waist. To give you a reference of how that piece of clothing looks when it's actually worn by another character: https://a.pomf.cat/htgrpw.jpg
Although I don't particularily mind your interpretation as folds, I think it would look better if it's more subdued like on the left side. (Hopefully it's intelligible what I'm trying to say, I'm not the best when it comes to describing stuff.)

Looking forward to how it's going to take shape from here on out!

Hi /w/, first-timer here with making vectors. I have experience with making renders though so I sorta know what I'm doing with the pen tool.

Just wondering though - can the techniques described in the Inkscape guide be applied in Illustrator too? If so, how? The bezier tool in Inkscape sounds pretty tasty, it looks a lot easier to use than the pen tool in Illustrator. I'm comfortable with the pen tool with making renders in Photoshop but I get easily frustrated with vectoring here in Illustrator using the pen tool.

Any other tips to make vectoring easier and faster too? I'm making designs for car stickers and 300dpi forces me to use vectors for high quality output. Vectoring feels really time-consuming for me and I want to get this out of the way so that I can start with the fun and creative part which is making the actual sticker design.

Pic related, it should show my sloppy pen tool work in Illustrator.

thanks /w/

>>
>>1902251
Unfortunately there are no shortcuts to making vectors if you want your quality to be anywhere near acceptable. You just have to take your time with it and make sure whatever you're working on looks right before moving onto the next thing.

One thing worth noting is that it's not always the best idea to follow the source image 100%; artists can get away with sloppy lines in drawings but once you blow it up to print that sloppiness will become really obvious and ugly. The "lump" on the inside line of her leg is a good example of that.

To add to both, make sure you keep all nodes and handles parallel in placement and handles in order to help keep the lineart smooth and consistent. This will add a considerable amount of time to your vectors, so you must have the patience in order to get this right. You will most likely not get it right on the first try, so you really have to be motivated to do multiple vectors (generally 5-6) to really nail it down.

Good luck. Post the results here and I'll be sure to critique them.

I don't know what version they're referring to, but I downloaded the 19.0.0 version (Illustrator CC 2015), which includes all the major and important updates like GPU mode, 64000% zoom, and the file recovery system. If you go back into 2014 you will not have some of these features.

I have had no problems using it for almost a year now, so it should be fine.

For so many hair noodles, it's kind of small. Have you tried finding a bigger image using google?

first requester here. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this. It's been a long wait but it's all worth it.

is it possible to get this vectored?

Looks great man. Any chance of getting an .ai upload of this?
>>
>>1902650
Well, it'll be pretty impossible to copy the style, since it's pretty painterly, so I'm not sure if anyone will pick it up.

I was just waiting to see if anyone noticed any errors.

I will have exported versions and this link on my DA later today as well.

The error I mentioned before is still on snakes hand, this >>1901865 AI should fix it.

Where monkeys jawline meets her hairline on the right side is a layer to high.

On Snail:
>part of her forehead above her right eye is yellow
>shadows cut into her left sleeve
>skirt color cuts into her left arm
>there is a line cutting into her arm just above her bracelet
>the small orange section below aforementioned line should be the color of her skirt
>color of her left arm is different from previous iterations as far as I can see

I think the color her arm had before works better.

Once upon a time a used to vector. Hell, I even got a vector accepted into the /w/ deviantart group which was a huge accomplishment for me. I had a request for an anon who's more than likely not here anymore but I want to finish it. Has anyone seen a vector of this picture? If so I shall go back into my eternal slumber and if not, I'll finish it.

For reference, this is how far along I got until I stopped vectoring. Obviously There is probably too many errors to even count on here, but I'm in the process of slowly fixing them.

I didn't say that I don't want to finish it, I just wanted to know if someone already beat me to it.

Decided to do my own request. Only managed a "clean" version so far though. Haven't figured out how best to go about the texture and "weathering" as it would be. Any advice on that?

Also, B/W only so far, because it looks terrible every time I try to add color because of the lack of texture.
>>
>>1903200
Inverted, because why not.
I have a thing for some of the simplistic stuff, since I sometimes like getting things printed for this or that.

To be honest: it depends on the weathering.

The easiest thing to do, though, is export it to the size you need, then use Photoshop to add the weathering you need.

Berring that: take a copy of it, bring it into Photoshop, do the effects, then bring it back in like that to illustrator, and add the effects as objects. You'll have a LOT of layers and a LOT of transparencies, opacities, gradients, etc. So be warned that it will take a LOT more work to do.

I'm just finishing up the lineart on this Auska vector.
I wanted so ask for some advise on what would be the best way to proceed with the colour on this one. Should I try to remove the pinkish tint and what would be the best way to go about removing it?

Remove the hue and go "true colors". there is fanart of her in this outfit.

Here is the one I'd go with - if you can find the bigger sample on the boorus or yande.re, I'd go that way. I can't go there from here, else I would......

>>1903269
And before I forget: I hope you're going to go through the hair lines at least - some of them are off-size to the rest, and it makes it look funny. You'll need to either thicken the thinner lines, or thin the thicker lines, depending on your hair line preferences...

Thanks, yeah the lineart still needs some work. I think I'll thicken the thinner lines.

I was looking around at a few Asuka pictures for colours. I think I might go with the colours from the one daul did recently. I'll probably make two versions though, because I think the original colours are cool too if on a matching background.
